Removed the Rear Sliding Tray-5TH Gen Limited

I removed the rear sliding tray today to see what was under there.Inquiring mind had to know! I also took some measurements of a bunch of stuff too. With tray out it's 42 inches high,45 inches wide(measured on the inside,wheel well to wheel well) and 68 inches long to the back of the 2nd row seats folded down.The rear door entrance is only 37 inches high by 46 inches wide though.

I also took off the back inside tailgate plastic trim cover so I could remove the rear tailgate latch.The paper cone JBL speakers look cheaper then I thought they would be by the sound of them.They are 6 inch round co-axials so upgrade in the future with Infinitys or BA's probably ....Pics on webshots link below.

There are eight 13mm bolts under those 2 covers on the tray that hold the tray to the slider rail assembly. To remove the covers they are just plastic push clips holding them in and start from the front with a flat blade screwdriver as there are tabs in the back that fit in a slot.The slider rail assembly is held in by four 15mm bolts.

To remove the front piece with the hidden compartment with the door(immediately aft of the rear seats) ,just remove two 10mm bolts(hidden under plastic trim piece at the front tiedowns) at the front tiedowns and then 3 push clips hold it down.Just grab it and pull up after you remove the 2 bolts.

Then they have a gray carpet like finish piece that is held in at the back by plastic pieces under the trim piece at the very back,again held in by plastic push clips.I have no idea what that wire and switch is going on the floor on that last pic as there is nothing underneath it.It looks like a airbag or rollover switch. You can unclip it from the floor and pick it up. Anybody know or have an idea?

The verdict is we lose about 6-7 inches of height in the back with the sliding tray installed. Here are a couple of pics from today and alot more at my webshots link down below. You have to click on the plus + to enlarge them on webshots.

What was your purpose in removing the tray? Seems like a good spot to insulate to dampen road noise...

Thanks for posting. In the first photo, in front of the slider, is the the hidden compartment the part that is upside down (with the white insulation showing)? I can't tell what that is.

I wonder what the parts would cost to replace the slider with the deck from the SR5? Anyone check that out?

Toyota probably didn't design the sliding cargo tray for that intended reason, but that feature can be utilized for mounting a fridge...Yes,it does take a lot of rear cargo space and probably is not practical for some...but i know guys who mount drawers back there on 4th gens to accommodate all there gear for off roading.*Notice the sliding tray for the fridge*

What are you going to put in its place?

I'm going to keep it for now. I am installing my Saris Traps bike rack ,from my last 4runner ,for my mountain bikes. I took the slider out to see what it is made of so I know what I'm dealing for installation.Figured I'm this far ,take it all apart to see what's under there.The tray is made of fiberglass so I'm going to pot some quick release nuts(aircraft hardware) into it so I can attach it easily only when we are going riding.After I cut the rack to the width of the tray. That way I can just slide the bikes in and out and sit on it to change shoes.

Yes , That's the "hidden compartment" turned upside down.
To find out how much it would cost for the solid deck,just go to your Toyota parts dept. or call and ask. I dont think the sliding tray is even an option on the 4cyl so have them check the 4cyl EPC for part numbers/price quotes.Or you can just go custom and make your own deck with carpeted plywood or honeycomb fiberglass,that's what I was going to do.

Basically it is a back saver/rear bumper saver, as you can pulll whatever cargo in/out so you can get to it easier.Kinda neat idea that grew on me but it does waste a few inches of vertical cargo space and would make it harder to load some big things.

No tiedown rings on the slideout itself.There are four hooks for the net though that you could probably tie something down .
As for the more secure rings ,there are four in the back that attach to the bed.

Good post Harper7, I am doing the same thing. I guess it depends on the size of bike you ride and saddle height. I did a quick fit check and it look like there is enough clearance to fork mount bikes in my TE with the slider installed. However its not much. When I lifted the front fork drop-outs off the carpet it appears that the traps will fit without the saddle hitting the roof, but I may have to use a shallow mount for the base, maybe 1/4 or 1/2" ply wood. Hopefully it will work. I just ordered the traps today. Thanks for the pics.

I'm working on installing the traps to the slider now .I had this same set-up in my last 4th gen. and the inner roof height is about an inch taller even with the slider.You may have to put a quick release on your bike seatpost.

I just got done taking the center console out so I can put in a iPhone dock .It comes out real easy too. Running the wire under the console ,up under the Nav and up thru to the glove compartment usb.Wow....Alot of wasted space under the console,not sure why they did'nt put more storage space there.I'll put some pics up on my website later.

I reached down in the rear cupholder and just pulled straight up. It is held in by 8 non-locking push clips. Then reached under to unplug the wiring plugs.

You have a TE so you have the manual 4x4 shift lever and will be a little different.

I put a iPhone Dock in that area in front of the rear cupholder and wired it down under the Nav and up thru to the USB in the glovebox. I cut a hole in the side of that storage the exact size of the dock and slid it in and secured it with the screws that hold the bottom of the dock on after drilling holes to match.I put the dock in just far enough so the back of the iPhone rest against the storage to help secure it.

The 3G iPhone's Ipod works better thru USB and you have some control thru the steering wheel controls.I use the bluetooth for the phone hands free.

There is a ton of space underneath the slider. It would be a great place to mount amps, etc. Just a thought. I am going to get some new pad and carpet and just carpet for now.

Thanks for the update on the switch....Could be a smart key module then or for X-REAS as you stated??I should written the part numbers down so I could look them up at the dealer.
I did start documenting part numbers on my pc for the plastic center console parts.All the silver plastic parts in the front interior are unfortunately black ABS plastic that is painted silver. Over time they will scratch,from keys ,kids,rings, ect., and the black will show thru but can be easily repalced or repainted.I was thinking of having mine painted black anyway or ordering a second set to strip or sand the silver paint off and then paint black.

There is another simular unknown switch under the center console in the back(brown) and a yaw damper switch(yellow) under there also in the front.

Just put the new carpet in the back. I ended up leaving the storage tray in the front, just behind back seats. It was a clean way to make everything blend back together with slider out. I think it turned out pretty good.
