Removing hood blems via hand polishing

I've got spots on the hood (Acid rain, bugs?) that I have used Meguiars Ultimate Compound via polish pad and significant elbow grease with minimal success. Prior to this I also used the clay bar. There are 7-8 nickle-sized spots that just do not want to go away. I don't want to go the electric polisher route. Are there hand applicator pads that provide a bit of cut? Do I go up to 105?

Have the blemishes eaten through the clear coat? If so, no amount of polishing will repair your hood (at least not that I'm aware of). Our hood has been sanded and primed in prep for new base coat - clear coat. Bird droppings that haven't been removed quickly are the biggest culprit.

The blems are etching into the clear coat from bird bombs. It was suggested to me that a general rule is if you hit trouble spots x2 with Ultimate Compound and they don't budge you may have clear coat damage and continuing could only make things worse. Its probably a good thing I did not have a polisher but was going at it by hand. Wet sanding is the next option but that will be somebody else having a go at it.
