if i change the gauge cluster can i swap the odometers out or will i have to be stuck with the mileage reading on whatever cluster i buy?

so i guess im asking, does the ecm tell the odometer what to display? or does the odometer only display the miles it has recorded?

Great question, I can help you slightly. With all of my LED jobs i typically test them out on my T4r before sending out. So odometer reading is kept in the cluster, i know that for sure. Where in the cluster I don't know. I have had multiple opportunities to test that, i just haven't. I don't think it is actually in the display its self. But i could be wrong.

There are companies out there who refurbish/calibrate and or sell instrument clusters and they can program the mileage to what it should be for your vehicle.

You will have to search for one in your area or buy from such a company online or locally.

Edit: I got you started with these search results.

refurbish instrument panel - Bing

ok so if i buy a cluster i should look for one very close to my mileage or i have to figure out a way to get it set correct miles

thanks guys, thats what i needed to know

i was naively hoping i could just plug my LED thing in the replacement cluster and that would be it

On another note there are I believe phone apps that allows someone to edited the mileage on these modern instrument clusters, I'm aware of this after reading of despicable auto auctions where they roll back the mileage using a phone app to get better prices on high mileage vehicles, check around on Youtube I'm willing to bet there are some videos on this subject!!

As always a lot of technology these days can be used for good or evil!!

im looking at a replacement cluster thats at 330k miles so naturally i want to keep my original 205k miles if i can but i dont want to get into any illegal BS and i saw the videos about resetting it but those show a computer chip has to be unsoldered so it can be reprogrammed and im not looking at getting that far into the weeds so i'll just keep looking to find a cluster thats the closest match to my 205k and roll with that

What's wrong with your cluster that you need to replace it?

Just another FYI, at least in my state but I think it's the same in every state once you do anything concerning the odometer that affects the mileage shown is not the actual mileage it has to be shown as such on the vehicle's Certificate of Title...unless it was "certified" by one of the companies I mentioned earlier of showing the actual mileage.

tach quit working, i figure just change the whole thing was best rather then try to repair the tach

i'll decide what to do depending on what condition and miles the parts i can find have.

i might just leave the tach broken unless the gauges will come out separately

im not messing with anything if its gonna be an issue to sell it

I bet your Tach Motor went out. You can get replacements for those. Worth a shot. I have an extra cluster. PM me.
