Replacing Stock Speakers (3rd Gen)

I've decided to replace the stock speakers in my '97 Limited 4runner. Does anyone know the max size I could fit? And I would appreciate any recommendations for replacements, ideally around $200.

fronts are 6-1/2'' components rears are like 4'' a plate can be made easily with some thin wood and 5-1/4'' speakers will fit

$200 for all 4? I would recommend Boston Acoustics if they fit your budget. 5.25s fit you just have to watch the depth and trim the plate to drop them in. I would recommend a 1" speaker spacer for the rear. That should make it clean and simple.

Edit: A 1/2" spacer would probably be a better choice but you could always sand down a larger spacer if needed.

Well there's not a lot of 85 watt RMS speakers for that cheap. Any speaker that RMS's higher than your stock speakers are going to sound great off an amp that RMS's about the same rate.

The thing to consider about the Alpines is, the crossover is very dinky. There are reviews, not a lot, that say it doesn't crossover the frequencies as well since the cross over is so small, something you may want to consider. I think, for the price, they are excellent speakers, and with a 4 channel amp, you are going to be satisfied.
Also, I do not have these speakers installed in my 4runner, yet, hopefully next week, but I have heard them in another friend's 4runner, WITHOUT an amp, great sounding if I do say so myself.

Yes. I think 5 1/4 is the biggest speaker you can put in your rear doors, also. I'm not sure if Alpine makes a 5 1/4 Type S, I know they make that size in Type R. Check Crutchfield.

Definitely. Infinity, Rockford, JL, Alpine (Type Rs), Kicker, I think Pioneer makes some too... there is a lot of 5 1/4 options.

If you're going with components for the rear as well, just pick up another set of 6.5s. The woofer will require the same amount of work as the 5.25 components to fit, maybe even less.

From what I've read, all I would need is 2 5.25 adapters. But if you say it's the same amount of work, Ill just get 6.5s in the front and back. And are there any threads on mods for the rear speaker well?

I have Kicker KS series (paid $170 for all 4) components but haven't had time to install them but am getting ready soon. I have 6" up front and 5.25" for the rear and I've been told it's a direct swap for the front and a minor mod for the rears to fit.

well, if you decide to 6.5's in the rear (I'm not sure if they'll fit... bigger motor, etc plays a role in that) but a good site for nicely priced speakers is woofersetc.com - i picked up both pairs of Type S's for 200 shipped.

You may not need an amp, but if you're paying that much speaker, you should give them what they deserve. It makes all the difference.

I don't remember seeing anything specific on it. The rear speaker mounts to a plastic plate which mounts to the interior door. When you pop off the panel you'll see how easy it is to get speakers to fit. The only real issue is depth, like i've mentioned. You'll also see a drip guard on the back of the plastic plate, pay attention to where the stock speaker is in relation to this so you can use it to gauge the new speakers. If you do go with components in the rear, the install will change. The woofer of the component is the same amount of work. You'll need to pick out and cut out where the tweeters will mount and then find a place for the crossovers. Not too bad but more than what some people plan on.

Yea, I'm going with with 5.25 Kicker KS50.2's in the back and 6.5 Infinity Reference 6020CS components in the front.

And about the tweeters in the back, any specific place I should mount them?

Yea. Been thinking and decided I might as well go ahead and get an amp too since everyone says it makes a huge difference. I'm probably going to get the Hifonics amp you showed me unless I can find a better one.
