First I would just like to say that the car that started for me every day, made numerous road and hunting trips with ease and got me through everything in the past five years, saved my life - twice.
This past Sunday, I was driving some classmates (with a Nissan of classmates following me) from St. Louis to our home in Omaha. The road conditions were slick, but nothing I'm not used to being from Nebraska. Travelling westbound on I-70, I approached an emergency vehicle and slowed down to go around it; business as usual. However, the fire chief decided to pull out from the median in front of me and stop. I slammed on the brakes but due to the ice, I couldn't stop and he couldn't get traction to apply the gas.
We smacked into him, airbags depoly and we spin around facing east on the I-70 median. Thank God no one was hurt. After being told repeatedly to stay in the car by law enforcement officials, another truck lost control on the interstate and came at us like a tordpedo. All we could do is brace ourselves for impact. The truck smashed into us and left a few of us bruised and cut up. But that was it.
That truck took TWO major hits and saved our lives TWICE before it left me. It had 150,000 miles on it and was immaculate. I loved it because it could take me anywhere and it did so with peace of mind knowing something obscure wouldn't break or go out on me. It also was a part of countless good times with my family and friends.
I feel like a part of me has died; people who know me and the 4Runner knew how amazing of a car it truly was. Both my sister and dad were fighting over who got it next! I swear the rest of my life to 4Runners! I have to thank my dad for talking me into buying it - I was a stubborn freshman in college who wanted a Chevy Silverado. I can proudly say I have never had an ounce of regret.
So, if you're having a beer anytime soon, please give a toast to our indestructable friends! As much as I would love a 2014, nothing can ever compare to my 1999 SR5. I will truly miss it and be thankful that it was able to save our lives twice before it left me.
