RIP 1999 SR5 (Obituary)

First I would just like to say that the car that started for me every day, made numerous road and hunting trips with ease and got me through everything in the past five years, saved my life - twice.

This past Sunday, I was driving some classmates (with a Nissan of classmates following me) from St. Louis to our home in Omaha. The road conditions were slick, but nothing I'm not used to being from Nebraska. Travelling westbound on I-70, I approached an emergency vehicle and slowed down to go around it; business as usual. However, the fire chief decided to pull out from the median in front of me and stop. I slammed on the brakes but due to the ice, I couldn't stop and he couldn't get traction to apply the gas.

We smacked into him, airbags depoly and we spin around facing east on the I-70 median. Thank God no one was hurt. After being told repeatedly to stay in the car by law enforcement officials, another truck lost control on the interstate and came at us like a tordpedo. All we could do is brace ourselves for impact. The truck smashed into us and left a few of us bruised and cut up. But that was it.

That truck took TWO major hits and saved our lives TWICE before it left me. It had 150,000 miles on it and was immaculate. I loved it because it could take me anywhere and it did so with peace of mind knowing something obscure wouldn't break or go out on me. It also was a part of countless good times with my family and friends.

I feel like a part of me has died; people who know me and the 4Runner knew how amazing of a car it truly was. Both my sister and dad were fighting over who got it next! I swear the rest of my life to 4Runners! I have to thank my dad for talking me into buying it - I was a stubborn freshman in college who wanted a Chevy Silverado. I can proudly say I have never had an ounce of regret.

So, if you're having a beer anytime soon, please give a toast to our indestructable friends! As much as I would love a 2014, nothing can ever compare to my 1999 SR5. I will truly miss it and be thankful that it was able to save our lives twice before it left me.

Sorry about your beloved truck but glad everyone is okay. Happy hunting for a replacement.

Glad you and your classmates are ok and still breathing. This are tough trucks, on the side note.....that thing will buff right out, a weekend of elbow grease and TLC will get her back on the road again in no time.

I've noted many toyota owners say "car/truck was a part of our family"
Glad to know these are life savers as well.

I can only imagine how you felt after the first hit and then see the second one coming at you. That sucks royal donkey balls. Sorry it happened but look on the bright side...that truck was a testament to reliability and safety and it will live on forever in your heart. I personally like the 3rd Gens better than any other so find another one if you can. Glad you and your buds are okay though.

What a terrible story. At least it doesn't seem too difficult to find 3rd gens 'round here. Glad everyone's all right. Also glad to see more Omaha members. Let me know if I can help ya out with anything.

Thanks man! Where are you located in Omaha? Omaha is a great 4Runner city... too bad most of them are mall crawlers. There some great modded 4Runners that I see running around tho!

Wow! That's some situation you ran into. Good to hear everyone is alright. That's my worry when driving on slick roads.

Looks like the Runner took a bullet for you by saving you twice!

Sorry to hear about the loss of your ride, man. She did her job and gave her life to save your buddy's and your's. Best of luck finding a replacement. I'll hug my IJM '99 in your rides honor.

No disrespect, but I'm gonna be "that guy" and suggest you part her out if you can so that she will live forever by being part of other members 4Runners.

You sound like you had a real connection with your truck and I can both understand and respect that so if it's too soon, my bad.
