On to the lower link armor. This went fairly smoothly. I was shocked. Did one side at a time, got it all fitted up and welded into place. Since I had access to all the zerk fittings, greased everything up, too.

Then onto the front skid mounting issue. One of the nuts that was welded inside the frame popped off, so there was no way to attach the side on one side. I thought for some time on how to get this fixed. I bought several bolts in various lengths of the appropriate size and thread pitch (metric) and cut the head off in order to make studs. Then I decided to drill out a hole a little larger in order to fit a nut into the opening and carefully slide over into position. At this point, I took my stud and threaded it into the nut which was now inside the frame. Broke out the welder and tacked it up nice and good and BAM, new mounting point. In order to keep things uniform, I put a stud into the other mounting location with thread lock and all good to go now.

Some updates. A while back, I installed a Yaesu FTM-400DR. The "brain" is mounted up underneath the steering column, right behind the knee airbag. With a little ingenuity, was able to make the bracket mount to some existing points in the area. That and a little persuasion. The next part was extremely difficult, routing the cable for the face plate. Pulled apart the center dash area and popped the little circular plug in the forward center section of the dash right up at the windshield. Proceeded to attempt to fish a wire through there to a point I could feed the cable from behind the dash. (Borrowed this idea from some here on the board.) Once I was able to get the wire through, I attached the cable and pulled it up to the dash and routed the remaining cable to the "brain". Then, since I didn't want to be reaching under the dash to connect and disconnect the mic, I found a nice CAT6 fitting online and mounted in under the fan knob. Allows for easy connection of the mic.

Looks awesome. Big fan of those Yaesu mobile units. My Yaesu handheld worked great this weekend, but I'll upgrade at some point. I really like the CAT 6 location there.
Hopefully calendars will align next time and we can make it on the same trip! Beautiful area up there, and I am itching to go back....

I am planning on the weekend of 6/3 to be up there. Have a trail 5N02R to check out. Walked part of it several weeks ago, and there was some challenging areas, was itching to give it a go, but did not have the time.

Dig the HAM mount with the remote hand held plug. Makes me rethink my set up.

I have a map from the Forest Service. You can go from 4 to either 108 or 88 in multiple routes. Lots of roads.

To mount the plug, I used a Dremmel with a cutting wheel. Taped up the panel, and marked up the hole as I measured from the back of the plug.

There are a ton of options, I have been using Gaia GPS and it has been great for FS roads. I would recommend checking it out if you haven't already!
Depending on when they can get them built, either the weekend before or after Memorial Day weekend. Then maybe a quick trip up the highway for some Sierras dirt time to get them dirty before heading home.

Tried again to get through Corral Hollow today. Since the trail is on the North side, there is not much sun exposure. Went about a couple miles in before it got to the point I didn't feel comfortable pushing it solo. Had to belly panning across some snow drifts. Muffler took a couple hits to the snow as well.

Spent the past several weekends seeing some sights and having fun. Had to head up to Yosemite for a wedding, so the wife and I made those most of the trip and drove around the park and took advantage of some morning hikes.

This past weekend, as with most, spent it up Highway 4 in the Sierra's.
Keep stopping by the local watering hole slash food establishment called The Lube Room looking for the free beer, but it seems I'm always a day early.
Headed up to Corral Hollow, which is fully open, no snow blocking the trail, while there is still some on the summit in the shade.

A few more from Corral Hollow. While it's not the most difficult trail, the scenery is amazing.
Took a break on the ridge, which happens to be on the back side ski run for Bear Valley. Made many runs down here in the winter. Good area on a powder day.
