Hi everyone. I'm thrilled to have found this site. I'm curious what T4R you would recommend for me!
I'm a 32 yr old rock climber. I drive a lot (10-12 hr driving days - so a little cab comfort and cruise control go a long way), and have been camping in my 4 cylinder 2WD '94 Toyota Pickup for these trips a few times a year for the last 9 yrs. I love the process of driving up to a climbing area, and just sleeping in the back on a platform. I do most of my own maintenance and repairs, and it's been really easy to do that with my truck.
A few weeks ago, I was with a friend about dream cars, and we walked past a beautiful TR4. I realized that it had everything I wanted: reliability, I would have some familiarity with repairs, great off-road, the back is connected to the front (it sucks having to walk around the truck to get from front to back), and the space in the back could be pretty similar to what I have in my truck now, if I take the seats out (bed needs to be 6'1" feet long).
I live in Atlanta now, and MN for the past 4 years, but Im moving to Salt Lake in July. I also ski a bit, so snow and ice. I'm planning on buying within the next 2 years (the truck has 253k right now, and I hear that 265-285k is usually when they die). I can save for a while, and I want something that will last 10 years or more. I'm thinking about $10k, but maybe that's unrealistic. While I'm saving, I'm dreaming of the perfect truck. Which is where you guys come in.
I've heard that '99 is the best year, and that they don't work after 150k miles, and I like the look of that year. I've heard that '96-'98 aren't the premium years, and '00-'01 have the lowest clearance. I've heard that the '03-'09 is a great run, and I prefer that look to the newer models. Basically, I've had a tough time telling from the forums I've been reading whether my specific needs would be addressed by the different years, cargo/sleeping space, and options.
I would appreciate any thoughts!
