Roof Rack Recommendations

For occasional roof transport of odd stuff or 4'x8' panels, the expedition racks seem like a less than perfect fit to me. I am in the process of solving the same problem. I am going with the Rhino-Rack roof track and Yakima Control Towers. Yes, I will be drilling into the roof. I had this done to my Sienna van years ago and it survived 2 house remodels and countless trips to Home Depot dragging home Sheetrock, OSB and 2x4's. The Yakima Control Towers attach in about 1 minute. Strapping a load to the 5' wide cross bars is a cinch. They come off just as fast, leaving nothing but the little Landing pads are left on the roof.

Here are two considerations, since you'll be using your rack like a truck bed.

First, If you have a sunroof, I would get a rack that either doesn't have a sunroof opening OR the Gobi rack with the sunroof insert (best of both worlds). I have a Gobi with the sunroof opening and I feel like I've lost a lot of real estate up there.

Second, getting a ladder is a huge bonus. It will make loading quicker, safer, and easier. It decreases the time you'll spend in the home depot parking lot loading and tying your 2x4s.
