Safari rack wind noise question

I seem several really nice safari racks, some with ladders on the back, on this board. Can anyone give me some feedback on the wind noise that these racks create? Also, if they adversely affect mileage. I would love to have a ladder to climb up and tie down my boats!

My Yakima makes quite a bit of noise at highway speeds, not so much around town. It's easy on/off so i only put it on when the need arises. Gobi makes the ladder, there is a couple of threads here on it with mixed reviews.

Gas mileage? Seems everyone asks about gas mileage when inquiring about mods they see here. Honestly if you all were really that concerned about fuel economy wouldn't you be driving a Prius

My bajarack does create noise (I think all safari style racks will), but it is not noticeable with the sunroof and sunrook shade closed at highway speeds.

As with most things, there are tradeoffs (noise, aerodynamics) for advantages (additional storage space/accessory mounting locations).

I have a Gobi rack w/ladder.

- With the sunroof closed the noise increase was minimal and really only noticeable at highway speeds.

- With the sunroof shade closed, you can barely hear it at all.

- With the sunroof open, its definitely not as pleasant as it used to be, especially with the sunroof insert in. For me, it's still bearable especially if I'm not on the highway.

- After I got my lights on, definitely makes a lot of noise with the sunroof open, it's loud. With the sunroof closed, it's tolerable for me. With the sunroof and shade closed, its not bad.

so there you have it - good luck with my totally relative and non-empirical answer :keyboard:

I have the Gobi Stealth. There is a big difference in wind noise after installation. I do not have lights up top and most of the noise I hear is around 70 MPH on the highway. It is better when you close the shade, but I can still hear it. However, as others have stated, the rack is awesome when you need the extra storage. I have been thinking about going back to the factory rack, but the extra storage space factor is what is holding me back at this time.

I have the same setup and agree with this 100%!
