I average 19.2 in the city with the stock tires inflated to 40psi. So either you're compelled to floor a 6K lb vehicle from light to light or you were dragging a huge acme anvil behind you.

Yeah you can call it what you will, but limited AWD, even on the highway I rarely saw more than 17 on average, towing a light trailer it was down in the 9-10 range, and in the city we averaged consistently 14-15.

We don't drive stop and go so much as much as lots of short trips, country hills, to and from school, etc.

I'm not trying to convince you your gas mileage is as bad as mine, just telling you my experience.

Now I found your followup more informative. But on point number 2, I'd look for a new dealer. My local guy basically begged me multiply times to take it for the weekend or at least over night for a test drive.

the GM of entire dealer chain is a friend of mine, he'd have let me keep it for a month if I wanted to - but the reality is even a weekend wouldn't be enough. I'm not going to abuse a new car that is not mine the way I would when I own it.

It took me about 3 weeks to realize the 4runner was just not a good fit...

I would have MADE it work if ...

1. a V8 was an option
2. a super charger was an option

I couldn't actually care less about gas mileage - nothing is as bad as the twin turbo cayenne was, where we averaged BARELY 11, SRt8 jeep... 12... that wasn't the deciding factor for me, it was just a culmination of things that added up in the negative column.

I was actually pretty keen on getting a 4th gen limited v8. I had a couple that I was strongly considering and too kfor inspection, and not once had even looked at the 5th gen because I didn't like the interior or the exterior as much. But I ended up with one because I got a smoking deal w/ a 6yr-200,000km warranty for about 8K more than the 4th gens I was looking at.

The interiors on the 4th gen were so much nicer than the 5th and its big fat knobs. However at the end of the day, I don't tow and it's actually got more cargo room, something that I need. The interior could be much better (coming from an Infiniti) but I've grown to live with it. It's my workhouse truck that does not need to be waxed constantly and can take the "offroad" abuse I need for work. It's got plenty enough get-up and go on the highway to pass people and the fuel mileage isn't bad for how big of a vehicle it is. Really, whoever has fuel economy and offroad capable SUV in the same sentence better be talking about how you choose one or the other!

Regarding towing, I don't think any vehicle no matter what it is should be towed at its claimed capacity - I've always heard 3/4 of claimed max.

Ironically, when we were looking at this 5th gen there was a loaded up 2009 4th gen limited, v8, 4x4, they were asking just a few k less than the 5th gen and we were like "why would we buy the older model when we can get the new one for just a few k more" - we had had several 4th gens and wanted something new... we'd probably have kept the 4th gen.

As far as towing capacity goes, it's always a marketing gimmick, the 5th gen lists 5000 lb capacity, using your rule only 3500 lbs would be reasonable - on a "truck" that's just not acceptable but I would tend to agree that more than 3500 lbs is pushing it on a 5th gen.

I will say that on MANY times with my GX I towed 7000 lbs and aside from being BEYOND the suspension rating and tongue weight recomendation it did quite well - AHC took care of the suspension leveling and the v8 was more than adequate.

the GTR is a killer car, no doubt - those photos are from a 5200 mile road trip I took with a friend that owned the GTR - it was a week of awesomeness for sure.

I didn't get that either. If your in town a lot, how the heck do u go through 20 vehicles? And if you are putting on that many miles to go through 20, than you have to be on the highway and that is the crappiest mileage ever.

Well, 20 vehicles isn't that hard to add up when you have 3 at a time - but to be fair the vehicles that see the high mileage are *MY* cars, not my wife's because I drive a ton for work - so right now that's the Lexus GS430 and the Supra if I know I'm going to have clients with me, I'll take the 4runner, or now the land cruiser.

My two "daily" cars have over 300k miles on them combined - 166k on the supra, and 156 on the GS430.

I appreciate the skepticism, my wife and I trade cars at least once every year or two - and in our 10 years of marriage we've had probably 30 cars ranging from Audi to Toyota - in general we've standardized on toyota vehicles over the past 5-6 years because they've been far less problematic than most, and far more resilient in a rough market. We've strayed to German cars/trucks - I had her in a twin turbo cayenne for a long time, that vehicle was amazing but when the 40k mile maintenance came around to the tune of like 4600$ I decided I didn't think it was worth keeping... However up to that point it was fast as hell, towed 7000 lbs with no problem and even on 20 (on Zeon's) did things off road that seemed to defy gravity thanks to all the nanny's...

It is what it s guys, I'm not trying to persuade anyone here to sell their 5th gen, I really wanted to love it, I liked the way it looked, I liked the utility it offered, and I liked the fact it was yet another toyota in our stable. It just wasn't the right choice for us.

Now if you're looking for a limited blizzard white AWD that has a prepaid lifetime XM, I can tell you where to find one

Of the 4runners we've owned only ONE of them was a v8, obviously all the GX's were V8s, the LX450 obviously an I6, and the LX/LCs v8s - what's your problem here? That you have to be right? The fact that you don't understand brand loyalty or heuristic product selection would suggest to me that you're either 1. young, dumb and full of cum, or 2. angry and bitter about something with a point to prove. With the number of toyotas I've owned, and specifically the number of 4r and 4r variants I've owned it made great logical sense to assume I'd like the 5th gen, I bought almost site unseen after trading in an 08 GX470 that had been destroyed in a hail storm. The fact is the GX470 was the RIGHT vehicle for us, right size, right power, but we took the opportunity to move up to a new 4runner and were unhappy - what's your problem with that stance? Do you really want to be that guy for the rest of your life?

My desire to own powerful cars is purely the enthusiast in me - 800hp supra, 500hp porsche SUV, come on who doesn't like those things... true story, 500hp SUV out ran 600whp supra @ the drag strip... with my wife driving the SUV. And more true stories - OTHER v6 4runners towed my supra just fine... Aside from the cayenne - I don't put my wife in cars like that, we got the cayenne for a song though so it was hard to resist.

I'm sorry you're insulted and take this as a personal attack against your manhood - and your statement about MOST being happy with their fit and finish is not played out in the rest of the comments - nearly everyone who has owned more than one toyota has stated that quality has come down but I guess you're skipping by that piece of information.

I should never have read this thread. Thanks to ZMV, I'm now reconsidering my 2011 4Runner purchase.

After thinking about it, it just doesn't suit my needs. I had hopes to turn this into my bug-out vehicle and/or Zombie Response Team vehicle but its simply not fast enough to escape DC traffic. Bumper to Bumper traffic makes it tough to bug-out fast enough and I simply don't think my 4Runner, even with a steel pushbar like the cops have is going to be enough. I need something more menancing.

LOL! Those PKs were complete junk. I drove them in the USAF back in the 90s while working nuclear weapons security. I can remember driving them on the hwy while doing off base nuclear weapons movements, you cant see out of them and the mirrors up front vibrate so bad you cannot see. You just pray nobody is next to you if changing lanes. LOL!!! Imagine being in that metal box when its -40 in North Dakota. Good heaters once warmed up.

PROS: I remember our 4 man Fire Team locking ourselves in there while on the B52 Alert Area, putting an empty pizza box on the turret stand and playing Spades for 12 hours! Ahahaaa memories!
