I have many mods on my truck, most of which I have not posted about, however I thought this one might come in as interesting and doable for those that rather not spend 650.00+… Now on to roof racks.
I recently bought a Rola Vortex. Now first off this is too small for my typical preferences and desires, so as many others did I bought the extension that will add 18.75 “ of very nice space. It also looks much better, BUT that was just not good enough for me ☺
Test fit with one extension:
Being 9-11 inches away from having a legitimate full-length roof rack I went back on the ole inter-web and mail ordered me another extension. Now this extension puts the length about 8.5-8.75” too long, so I bought this one with the intensions of cutting it down and that is exactly what I did.
After I got it all cut down, cleaned, and re-measured I did what any male that can call themselves a Man would do…I harnessed the power of electricity and heat an fused the metals back together.
OK, so now a couple things bothered me about this particular roof basket and about roof baskets in general. Im not a fan of how high the mounting system causes the basket to sit and is seemingly less strong, so I plan on building some legs for it rest upon that run into the existing tracks. Second issue was how the extensions lined up, Rola doesn’t have Whitson Metal Works (shout out for your awesome racks) working for them, so the welds are crappy and the tubing doesn’t line up perfect, which is another aspect I will fix.
