SamSter0077's 97 4Runner build

Nice work, those look like Todd's welds? Its good to have friends with a giant machine shop lol

Agreed! Todd is badass! I made a comment "aw man.. I will have to open the Swing out to lower the window.." while he was in ear shot. Next thing you know, he was cutting a hole in it.. Great Guy.

Looks great! I wonder if the swing-away is closer to your hatch because you retro-fitted it on there?? I can get my key in the hatch without opening the swing-away, but I don't have a cut-out.

I bought Scratch and dent, remember?? When I compared mine to recent photo's.. I notice my Spindle was shorter, the little cap piece is significantly longer on the ones they are shipping now. My guess is, for the keyhole.

Once again, I broke a ring gear. I did this hill last time, no issues.. this time.. BANG!

Pulled it at base camp, another group there said they had one close by. Drew drove me almost 2 hours away to get it and then to walmart for parts. Thanks to Robbie for bringing some oil and jack stands and everyone else for helping with the labor.. got it changed out the next morning and drove home.

Did some homework, below are my options.. thoughts?

Options:

1. ARB Locker Front and rear, Nitro Gears 5.29 front and rear w/ARB compressor $3,050.00
2. ARB Locker in the rear, Nitro Gears 5.29 front and rear w/ARB compressor $2,200.00
3. ARB Locker in the rear, 4.10 gears w/ compressor. - $1,585.00
4. Send my 3rd in, and have him rebuild it with NITRO gears/ new seals & bearings. Replace the front gear ratio at the same time (4.88). $1180.00 w/5 year warranty
5. Grizzly Locker w/ nitro gears (rear only) 4.10 $1095.00
6. Send my 3rd in, and have him rebuild it with NITRO gears/ new seals & bearings. $580.00 w/5 year warranty

in closing.. it sounds like breaking an OEM 4.10 is rare. The fact I have done it twice in two months makes me think I am doing something wrong in the setup. I think the smartest thing is to send the broken one to ECGS and let them rebuild it right. While it is there though, should I spend the extra $600.00 and change the gear ratio. I am not made of money and this is going to kill my 4 corners budget. oh and, after all of this.. I get a 5 year warranty, so breaking another one is someone else's problem.. :D

Long time no posts.. been busy at work.

This past weekend, got stuck in the mud for 10+ hours.. I had my Kids with me at the time. Had a fellow forum member get stuck 15 minutes from my house so I decided to show up and help.. got stuck before 9 am and out after dark _7:30 ish).

Enjoy..

The 99 SC runner was the first to get stuck, then the Ford 250, then me, than the 2nd Gen Tacoma.. The Tacoma got out first, then got the 99 and the Ford out but couldn't get me loose. it took a tow truck and the ford 250 4x4 to pull at the same time to break mine loose.

Wow, what am embarrassing last post. Been around, 4runner's been working too... Been wheeling it hard, since Zuk fixed my rear diff.. I have note blown up another one in more than a year. Got back into T4R after meeting a bunch of cool t4r folk at Jambo this year. Wanted to knock the dust off my build thread..

I now tow the 4runner behind my Winnebago, it works great. @4500 lbs, it's not really a big deal for the v10 E450 chassis. long trips, I remove the driveline and leave it in 2hi.. for short trips (100 miles one way), i just shift the transfer case into Neutral. I have been checking the output bearing on the transfer case with my hand, it's barely warm.. so pretty sure it's ok.

yes, I know my truck was very dirty.. towing it behind the Winnebago seems to do that. I busted out my passenger driver rear quarter glass... tried replacing it with Lexan... glued it back in I don't know how many times.. I have now given up. I got new replacement glass... should go in this weekend.

the old 4runner has been kind of beat up lately. I bought a 488 front diff locked.. just waiting to find the Manual lockout spindles from 96-2004 tacoma before installing. I also need to finish putting 4.88 in the rear, ZUK doesnt like working in the heat.. might have to wait till October to get that done.

if anyone is interested in my semi ghetto trailer brake install in the 4runner, let me know. I can post some photo's.. till the next mod.. :D

Damn, it's been 2 years!! Still getting in tight spots I see. Nothing's changed lol.

Little things.. New AC, wired ARB fridge, bud built skid.. Nothing worthy to speak of. I will have a good update when I get done sourcing parts to Go manual hubs and lock front. Soon!

As for Jambo pics, I didn't take any of my runner. It's kind if ugly now.. :(

Got my Gears finally..

Installed the front 4.88 this past weekend. HOW THE HELL do you remove the diff without taking the pinion flange off first? After fighting with it for more than an hour, taking lunch, and trying again.. I just removed the flange and it dropped out. Anyone else have this happen?

Anyways, I replaced the front diff, with Locker... upgrade to manual hubs & Uniball UCA's while at it. I am going to do the rear diff tonight, 4.88 with Lockright. Finally locked front and rear and a gear change should make things a little easier. I am missing the Center Hub bolt on the CV's, and need to put the pinion flange back on the front diff without screwing up the crush sleeve.

I have to get it out of the garage because my other truck is going in the shop.. wife got rear ended on the freeway..
