Sandwich adapter anyone?

Has anyone installed the oil cooler sandwich adapter on their v6 runner? This is the oil cooler that comes with the tow package on the taco’s and is listed as an option for the 4runner when installing the WD receiver. Part number is: 710-31010.

This is a water cooled system that from my understanding and gets connected to the radiator or block somewhere so the water pump just circulates water through the sandwich. My question is can anyone tell me where the 2 cooler lines get connected to?

Any Taco guys out there with the tow package that can take a look under the hood and tell me where these lines connect?

That's a little rich for my blood. IMHO there's other options for significantly less money. Do you have one or access to one cheap?

A little rich for me too. But I figured if I could find out where / how the OEM hooks then I could use that to install an after market one. I have found them from $60 to about $200 for a kit.

The kits I found have an external radiator but they don’t have any sort of pump so my best guess is that they still need to be connected into the water pump somehow. So that’s my question where do you connect these?

Hey whata know I'm trying to do the same thing! I saw this thread while searching but did not see that you completed the install. Have you?

Also, how exactly are you going about running the lines? I have never done one of these installs myself but I would think you need to have a pump that is going to circulate the coolant through the system right? Are you planning on tapping into the existing cooling system or did this kit come with a pump? Can they be self circulating somehow?

I know the OEM part does not come with an external radiator or at least I can’t find one on any of the parts diagrams so it must connect to the main radiator or somewhere on the block / manifold to circulate coolant through the sandwich.
 
Don't these actually circulate the engine oil through them? Much like external transmission coolers do? hence why there is no pump for coolant.

You may want to look around at some other toyota models that came with factory oil coolers, I know my Mr2 used to have one, just like the oem one pictured, but is probably a different size than the tacoma/4runner one.
Personally, I have a kit that came off an old military helicopter, just waiting for the right trail rig to install on.
 
I've been going though other toyota site for a good week at school, work, home and found some threads enjoy. I hope the install is as easy as the chevy one.

This is exactly what I was looking for. The pic’s on the Tacoma board show exactly how the oil cooler is connected. I must admit however, I am jealous of the supercharger on his rig. Some day us 4runner owners will be supercharged if URD ever releases a kit for us 4th gen-ers.

Anyway the OEM oil cooler is a water cooled closed system. You can see via the pic’s that it connects to the water pump directly. The other systems like Flex-a-lite are open systems that pump oil through the cooler via the engines oil pump. I think they work by forcing the oil through the cooling lines and fins before returning back to the oil filter but I am not 100% sure about this.

No prob, I wanna do the same however I do no completely understand the water cooled way. I'm guessing coolant from the radiator passes with the engine oil to cool it like with the OEM tranny cooler. I would love to go the OEM way but I don't understand $500. I was gonna do the Flex-a-lite way and mount the engine oil cooler in front of the radiator. I'll post pics ASAP when I get it.
 
You guys are making this very confusing and it simply isn't. Most oil coolers on the market use ambient air blowing across fins to cool oil that passes through the cooler. This oil is passed through by the oil pump. This process also increases your oil system capacity which helps with oil wear and so on.

The stock system uses engine coolant to cool the oil. The oil can only get as cool as the coolant in the system, which is why I don't beleive in this style of oil cooling. I don't recommend this style, but it does have less exposure to a potentially cracked hose or cracked cooler that could drain out oil. It does add coolant system hoses however.

I haven't gotten the cooler yet in order to get the free shipping it would take a minimum of 5 days. The way I was going to run it is to mount where the factory transmission cooler would be if I had it. if you look closely you will see to holes on either side of the radiator and thats where I'm planing to run my oil lines. don't worry I'll post pics of the install.
 
I got some additional information on using the OEM cooler for anyone who is considering this as an option. After looking at how this is set up on a Tacoma it turns out that the 4runners do not have the same water inlet housing for starters. I can speak for the v6 08 limited. The 4runner has part #323-0P010 which is missing the stem that connects to the oil cooler. The towing package changes this part to #323-0P020 which has a stem for connecting one of the lines. Given this the OEM cooler is just not practical. The cooler runs about $530 and the different water inlet housing is about $72 plus anything else that I am missing. Not worth it at all.

So it’s aftermarket for me. I will definitely have a look at the one SkylineGTRracer posted pics of. Thanks for the help everyone!
