Yeah, mines a 1996. I put in the codes that are in this thread

Is there a way to get the XGauge to work with a 1996?


Edit: just read alittle in this thread and sounds like I’m sol on getting the XGauge trans temp to work.

Need to figure out a way to get a trans temp gauge in my truck.

Any suggestions?

No way to get it working as the truck does not have a trans temp sensor. You will have to install one yourself and run an aftermarket gauge.

The truck DOES have a trans temp sensor. The ECU just doesn't report it anywhere that is available over OBD-II.

ScanGuage II (v4.51) - Engine Oil Temp - 2018 Off Road Premium

New to forum and new 4Runner. I know there are many ScanGuage threads and I've read many of them and haven't found a precise answer to my question, so I'm reviving this thread.

I have a new 2018 TRD Off Road Premium factory stock and a new ScanGuage II. I programmed X-Guages for trans temp and engine oil temp. The trans temps and the built-in coolant temp read as expected. However I'm puzzled by the engine oil temp reading. I programmed the codes I found on the ScanGuage website as follows:

(ScanGuage has removed the codes for 4Runner engine oil temp, so I have deleted the link. They said although the codes I found are correct and work, they were posted inadvertently and have not yet been publicly released. )

After driving for about an hour at highway speeds the engine oil temp reading on the ScanGuage tracks almost perfectly the transmission fluid temperatures (160 to 170 degrees F). I expected the EOT to be substantially higher.

Any idea where I'm going wrong here? I've double and triple checked my programming of the ScanGuage and it matches the codes from their website.

Your in the 3rd gen section. But your validation test is to let it sit over night and then turn ignition to run without starting and see how close to ambient temp your engine, intake, oil, and trans temp sensors are as well as to each other.

Does your engine have a oil cooler?

After sitting overnight without starting, coolant, trans fluid and engine oil all report the same exact temp.

I say your good to go with oil temp. Since all read the same temp. (And I'm guessing very close to outside temp)

Our 3.4 V6 has a factory engine oil cooler. Wondering if yours had one also.

Put a SGII in my '01 - not seeing results though

Anyone know why my TFT wouldn’t be working after entering the code?

Is your truck a '96-'98? If so, it won't report it. What did you enter for the XGauge code?

Mine is an '01 Limited 4wd, but I got the same result - so I'm somewhat perplexed. What do you guys think?

I believe the 99's are able to report this based on what others have said but I can't figure out why I'm not getting any data.

The code I started with was posted a few pages back and said to read out the same as the user's wideband.

My reading was in decimal points and something like 0.45. Does that make sense?

Replace your 14 with an 06 and see what you get. The engine know the air fuel ratio or it wouldn’t be able to adjust the fuel trims.

I was looking for the target AF ratio for my 97 just messing around one day and posted my results in another thread. I was wrong on the 05 address being target but when I replaced the 5 with a 6 things started looking like it was the real time AF ratio for my 97. Will it work on the 99 and up ECU? Don’t know with out others testing.

I sent a similar response via PM, but it would be good to mention it here again... On '99/'00 trucks, it has to be a California Emissions to get the AF sensor. '01/'02 trucks all have the AF sensor. If you have a Federal Emissions truck, it won't be able to report AF ratio correctly.

This and your PM was helpful. I believe I have(and will confirm for certain after work) a federal truck, so that would mean it wouldn't read correctly. Bummer. I guess I need to get an AFR gauge.

The narrow band O2 sensor is still an AF sensor. Just not as accurate. They took a 0-1v with .5v being stoch and expanded it to 0-5v. If it wouldn’t be a AF sensor there would be no way anything with a narrow band sensor would pass emissions. The ECU still has to figure out the air fuel ratio to adjust fuel trims.

I’ve used them as an AF monitor for my motorcycles since the early 90’s and it still performs flawlessly. However, I prefer my brothers wide band.

Light throttle cruise mode I shot for .4v, and WOT .90 to .92v

I stated before that the front 02 narrow band is a a/f sensor and was told I was wrong.

I agree with 19963.4lsr5 that they are AF sensors. I had one goto crap on my 97 and it sucked down the fuel until I replaced the front 02 sensor.

Are they as accurate as the wide band? Absolutely not as we have only 0 to 1v. Where as the wide band are 0 to 5v.

So all that said, assuming my SCII is coded properly, what types of readings should I be looking for? I was seeing everything from .45 up to 19.x and everywhere in between.

I have yet to try switching the 14 to an 06 like was mentioned but plan too. what should I expect happens with that switch?

I've read a lot about Scan Gauges and coding but I am admittedly still pretty new and getting it to do what I want.

This link is what my 97 looks like warming up. I do not know if your 99 will have the same address since it appears yours is the newer style wide band ECU.

All in all the AF reading in the ECU should behave the same way an Air Fuel monitor from AEM or others would.

The ECU actual AF reading may jump around more than an aftermarket one. I’m sure there is averaging built into the aftermarket units to make the readout more user friendly.

I know the reading I posted the video of after the engine warms up it will jump around from 14.5 to 15.2 at times. And this PID always goes to 14.6 when it’s in open loop.

Does your ‘99 have one catalytic converters or two? This will determine whether or not you have an AFR sensor that can accurately report your air-fuel ratio.

Both sensors types report AF ratio. The newer wide band is more accurate.

A lot of disinformation being tossed around in recent posts.

“02 narrow band is a a/f sensor” is a conflicting statement, because an “a/f sensor” is another name for a wideband. And a narrow band is, well, a narrowband.

A narrowband can only see if a mixture is rich or lean. But the narrowband doesn’t know how rich or how lean the mixture is. So when the narrow band consistently reports a lean mixture, the ECU adjusts incrementally adjusts the mixture richer until the narrowband indicates the mixture is now rich. Same thing when the narrowband consistently reports a rich mixture, the ECU leans it out until narrowband reports a lean condition. When the narrowband is constantly cycling back in forth between lean and rich mixture, the ECU knows it’s close to stoich where it needs to be.

A wideband (or A/F sensor) on the other hand knows “how” rich or lean the mixture is, unlike narrowband.

Umm a narrow band sensor goes rich and lean because the fuel injection is doing it on purpose in closed loop. The AF Ratio is a average of the highs and lows if you have a Good volt meter that has averaging capability you can see it for yourself. If you buy an AEM or whatever it does the averaging for you in the sensors display.

Go wide open throttle on a rig with a narrow band sensor sometime and watch your front O2 sensor voltage. It will instantly stop switching and be around .88 to .95v and hold it steady till you go Closed Loop again.

I have used a narrow band sensor as an AF monitor since the early 90’s. It works perfectly fine, just not as accurate. Wide open throttle I jetted for .92v (around 12.7 to 1) and in cruise mode I shot for .4-.5v (15.5-14.7 to 1).

I don’t know why they are labeled different now. They both do the same job, they use to simply be called a “narrow band” or a “wide band” O2 sensor.

The wide band existed in the 90’s but the device was thousands of dollars and only Dyno shops had them. Or they used a CO sniffer and converted it to AF ratio. To me “AF sensor” is just a buzz word.
