I don’t know why they are labeled different now.

They use different technologies. While they all measure the A/F ratio is some way, they have different sensitivities and effective ranges.

This explains is fairly well (ignore the HHO crap):

The "A/F Sensor" equipped 4Runners ('99+ CA, '01+ all) use the 'middle' style that is better than an old school narrow-band sensor but not as sensitive as a full wide band sensor.

I know from experience that there are two different types of narrow band O2 sensors. And it’s the material they use that determines the switching frequency of the sensor.

That switching frequency determines if the closed sensor works correctly or not. Chrysler products (mopar,jeep, Dodge, etc. an example, do not work well with the mopar PCM. I do not use a Bosch O2 sensor on a Mopar. It will cause a code or false indication and screw up the readings to the point that you think your PCM/ECU is bad and replace it only to discover you got the same problems and the only thing different is cheeping out on the O2 sensor.
