ScanGuage II Trans Temp X Guage?

awesome, Jeff! glad it worked for you.

i'm gonna go diddle with it some more today and try to determine how my addled brain botched the job. there's no reason it shouldn't be working, apparently.

Just tried it, and...It works for me!

Man I LOVE this forum. Biggest complaint I had with the Scanguage tranny temp was that is fluctuates so rapidly (when read at the converter) which IMO is less useful than the temp of the fluid in the pan. Now I have the option of both!

Thanks guys! Here's a pic- bottom number value shows the reading at the converter as I revved the engine in "D" with the brakes on. Notice the temp spike, which went from 75 to 91 in about 3 seconds. Bottom right shows the fluid temp in the pan. Much more consistent.
Qjake You will probably be interested in this! I remember we had a discussion about tranny temps on the Scanguage while camping last year...

Awesome!!!!

Sandcrawler:

I suspect you've tried this already, but wonder if there's a sequencing issue with these 3 different transmission temp codes?

Would they need to be entered in a specific order?

Good find sandcrawler! Thx Jeff for pointing me back here.

When I first programed mine there was only one code that I could find so I will definitely try out the others tomorrow. I had the same experience with the temps taking wild swings of 20-30* in a matter of 2-3 seconds so having a more reliable pan temp would certainly be a plus.

each is a discrete code, pulling data from a particular "address" accessible via the OBDII connector, so each is "self-contained", so to speak. it's a good thought, though. thanks, Lester.

i bet you're using the same code i had programmed in mine before it was repaired, Qjake.

and GOOD NEWS: i got the pan temp (2808) code to work on mine this afternoon. i just entered it again—very carefully—in a new XGauge position and bada-bing, it worked. i did this in a parking lot while my wife was in a store, so i only had limited time to check the values as we drove home, but definitely different readings. i'll have to go back in and clean out my borked XGauge code entries now.

so there you go, pan temps. very cool.

Sweet! Glad that worked for you Sandcrawler. my next question is when should I get my transmission fluid replaced? Most charts I see online say fluid life gets halved every 20 degrees over 170. Therefore if my fluid temps were at at 200 for a sustained period , then it's usefulness is about 35k miles. Since I happen to be at 35k miles now should I change out my fluid?

Yes, I realize this is rough rounding but the fluid also passes through the torque convertor, unless I'm mistaken. Therefore the fluid probably heats up much higher than the pan temps at the convertor. I understand this is probably "instantaneous"

Stupid iPod

But I assume that the fluid passes through the convertor and reaching peak temps at least for a bit.

So really my main question is Do you think I'm bring overly conservative to change the fluid at 35 k, or should I wait til 50 k miles? Btw, I talked yo the dealership and it's about. $300 for a fluid swap. I'm leaning towards getting i changed. I've already towed from DC to Vegas and a bunch9 on the west coast.

sorry for the late response. i think Toyota only calls for replacing ATF @ 60k under the severe service schedule. that said, the temps you're reporting are way, way higher than what i've seen. hopefully some other guys who tow frequently in conditions like yours will chime in to give you better advice.

btw: "Stupid iPod" starts to your posts are super funny. would make a good username! :smashputer:

I was finally able to get both codes working and I even have them displaying in Celsius to match the rest of my temperature readouts. :canada:

After reading txbonds' post here I learned that one of the TXDs listed on the X-Gauge page seems to be off by a digit. I changed it as suggested in his thread and now I have both (pan and torque convertor output) temperature readings active. Before I could only get the convertor reading, which is arguably the less useful temperature.

I did some more reading tonight and found the Scangauge Australia page. After comparing the X-Gauge codes listed there to the ones on the North American site it seemed like modifying the MTH entry would change the output from Farenheit to Celsius. I tested it tonight and it works like a charm.

For those who are interested, here are the codes I used. They are the exact same other than the RXD value:

Torque Convertor
TXD: 07E02182
RXF: 046105820000
RXD: 3808
MTH: 00090005FFD8 (00010001FFD8 for Celsius)
Name: cTC

Pan
TXD: 07E02182
RXF: 046105820000
RXD: 2808
MTH: 00090005FFD8 (00010001FFD8 for Celsius)
Name: cTP

As it turns out, these are the same codes sandcrawler posted back in Post 16 but I think the distinction of using 07E0 instead of 07E1 may have been missed. It does appear to be an error on the Scangauge site. I sent them an email about a few other things so when I hear back from them I'll mention this in order to save people the headache in the future.

Thanks so much for posting this!! Just coded mine in last night. As you mentioned, Tq Conv code is correct, but the pan temp just showed up blank using the code listed on the scangauge site. Tried the numerical change you suggested and we're golden... whoohoo!!

As an aside, for anybody in the market, I picked mine up at AdvanceAutoParts.com. The going rate seems to be about $160 for these things on Amazon and other online retailers, but Advance always seems to be running a 15% off/20% off coupon code on their site, plus free s/h on $75+. Picked mine up for $139 OTD w/ tax. https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p...p-monitor-sg2/10206633-P?searchTerm=scangauge

I need a new place to mount mine, where does everyone have theirs?

I had mine velcroed to the headliner above the rearview mirror, the velcro is strong enough but the headliner fabric itself is not enough to hook to and its started to fall off on rough roads
