Scion HU

I recently purchased a Blk 2005 $Runner SR5 V6 4WD with stock HU and speakers. They suck (not the Runner of course). I've been following this thread and wanted to know if there is a difference between a 2004 and 2005 Scion xB HU? I found a deal for both, but the 2005 is $30 higher. Actually, the HU from the 2005 xB has a manufacturer date of Aug/2004 (technically, both may be 2004 HUs). Since I have no idea about car stereos, except that I like a nice sound when I play music, I figure why not start here. Also, since these Scion HUs seem to be plug and play, should I really expect any additional wiring from these sellers? If there is something that is supposed to come with a Scion HU, like adapter, brackets, or harness? This info would be useful because it will definitely make a difference in my purchase. Also, has anyone installed Infinity Reference speakers for their front doors? Circuit City has a 2-way on sale, but there appears to be a tweeter already installed as part of my stock. I'm not sure if I can use this tweeter with the Infinity speakers or, do I just go with one of those component speakers that comes with a tweeter and just replace everything??

The difference between 2004 and 2005 units is that 2005 units have a customizable "greeting". On 2004's, it reads "Scion" when the radio is started and you can't change it. The 2005's allow you to change it. Additionally, the 2005 units have Sound Retouch for MP3 discs that enhances the sound quality of MP3's. It's very noticeable when it's on/off.

If you have the stock 6-speaker system, no new wiring is needed, everything is there. Just take off the brackets from your old unit and screw them onto the new Scion unit and that's it. Very simple. I wouldn't expect anything but the radio from the seller, anything included will just be extra. If you get a 6-disc model, make sure the seller places it in "ship mode" before shipping it. A lot of 6-disc units have been damaged from not being put into ship mode.

I'm still contemplating speaker upgrades, so I really can't help you with that.

Actually the year of the make really has nothing to do witht he text ability. Scion upgraded the radios half way through 2004. The old model number is T1801, the NEW model number is T1804.

You want the radio that has T1804 on the face plate. If the 2004 is cheaper and is the T1804 model, then go with that one.

So I'm just a little confused (what else is new). I've got the JBL 6 disk, 10 speaker. Is there a Scion 6 disk that is compatible? If so, how much are they?

nope, the Scion radios aren't compatible with the JBL system. It's a plug and play for the stand 4Runner stereo.

Thanks tkr128 and 2K34R! I'm hoping to find a 6-disc, but they're hard to find. Someone mentioned checking out scionlife.com, so I'm keeping an eye out there as well. FM Reception Quality ??

After installing the Scion HU the FM reception has suffered.
Stations that previously were clear are now fuzzy at times.
I drilled the hole for the 2nd antenna lead, both are connected.
Cd's are fine......
Any suggestions ?? For FM reception??

Do you remember if you reconnected the antenna amplifier power wire back up? It would be the single wire connector that is square in shape and not rectangular like all of the others. It also had some foam on it to stop it from rattling about.

Every plug on the back of our radios, be it the Scion or the Toyota, has a corresponding port. No plug fits into any other connector. No 2 are the same size or have the same pin pattern.

So the is no way to mess this up, really. It's like those block games we had when we were 2 years old, the the square block only fits into the square hole, and the circle only fits into the circle hole.

If you have a lose plug behind your radio, you missed something. And there is no other port that it will fit into, so just plug it in.

I don't think I left anything unplugged.
Every wire that came off was plugged into the new HU.
I may take another look, as it's probably easier the 2nd time.
The reception isn't horrible, just not as good as the original.

could the Terk XM Direct(XMD1000) Universal Sat unit($50) be used in place of the Toyota XM reciever($400)?

and/or would a converter ie: the PIE TOY03-AUX be neccessary for this set-up?

Unless the terk plug fits in the CD changer slot on the back of the radio, you will need the PIE adpater.

Essentially, that is what the PIE adapter does. Converts all other RCA plugs into the CD chager plug.

have not gotten the scion head unit, but its on order, so I should have it soon. Like everyone else, I got it off ebay. One question, do they typically come with the mounting brackets, or do you have to pull the existing ones from the current head unit? anyone know?

The 2 I ordered didn't have the bracket. It would've been wrong anyway since it came out of a Scion. You can use the original brackets on your stock radio (2 screws on each side).
