Seafoam in Gas Tank - Homemade?

I have read quite a few different sites using "homemade" seafoam which is a rato of

40-60% Pail Oil: Deisel Fuel, Automatic transmission fluid, or a light motor oil.

25-35% Napatha

10-20% IPA AKA: Isopropyl Alcohol

Homemade Seafoam Knockoff

Has anyone tried this with success? I want to use 3-4 bottles of seafoam in the tank to clear out and clean from the tank to the engne. (I already did seafoam in the intake with the aerosol version)

Any comments? I already have the IPA isopropyl alcohol from the electronics store, and the other ingredients are easy to get

Here's my experience with seafoam. I bought a 1996 grand Cherokee in around 2007 or 2008. It was in good shape but as with any used vehicle I buy, I change all fluids, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, belts, hoses, all that good stuff. This time I decided to toss some seafoam in the gas tank since it was all the rage about that time in history. Well it worked, it cleaned the inside of the tank, it also clogged up my fuel pump. Ended up having to drop the tank and replace the 2 filters because the crap that was in the tank was all broken free and caught up in the filters. Was it worth it? Absolutely not, that crap could have stayed in the tank forever and done no harm at all. If you use it regularly from new as preventative maintenance, great, but don't put it in an old fuel tank.

I use Seafoam a lot with great luck on getting carbs to clean out if they sat too long with the crappy fuel we have. Dump it in heavy..run it...let it sit...run it...and it does a good job of opening up the jets.

For regular dumping and burning through the system to keep it clean I use Marvel Mystery and straight rubbing alcohol. (Much Cheaper) The alcohol seems to take out the water/moisture and the Mystery Oil seems to keep the system clean.

Acetone is better than rubbing alcohol at absorbing moisture and is a solvent and a decent octane improver. I've been putting it in my vehicles since the early 90's. I put 4oz in at each fill up using two 2oz chemical proof syringes I got from the company that makes and sells Battery Equalizer.

If you think your tank is contained, drop the tank. Do a proper clean out.

Have you had any problems loosening the deposits in the tank?

I have 300,000 Kilometers on my 3.4L so now I’m concerned about waking that funk up

If you have clean gas, don't worry about it. I dropped my tank with 219,000 mi (352,000 km) and was so clean I could see my reflection on the bottom.

I've had no issues. My project 4Runner had 260,000 miles. Been doing it to the 4Runner since I put the engine in it in May of 2017.

Or just buy the Seafoam for $7 a bottle. Not sure where they got $12 from.

Regardless of the product, I would suggest NEVER use it in heavy doses. Like people said, if it works too well, it'll clean too fast and just create clogs. Add a bit to every tank of gas. Pour it in first at an empty tank, then put in your gas so it mixes it up, then go from there.

Don't just put 4 bottles straight in or you'll be posting in a week asking about how to remove your fuel pump, filters, and injectors.


There's a reason SeaFoam has their 3/3/3 ratio on the bottle.
