Secondary Air Injection Pump Failure on V8's! Important!

I bought my 2005 V8 about 5 weeks ago and I hear the shop vac noise on every cold start. I have not had any dash lights come on. Should I contact Toyota about it?

Call toyota corp, with the ref#'s on page 1 of this thread so its documented. Then buy this kit and be done with it.

Sooooo........I know nothing about emissions.....I'm assuming CA is the "most anal" of all the states about it.
Unless someone opens your hood and knows what to look for......they will never know.
The AIP system only works on certain cold start conditions(when you start truck in morning.....and even then, depending on ambient air temp only some times). SO......when you go to have emissions done your 4R will already be warm and no issues. I don't THINK their testing equipment will not know it is there. The only way they would is if they have software that watches ambient air temp sensor on our trucks and sees the "blip" in temperature when the starter and bypass are engaged for those 2 secs or so. If your REALLY worried about it you can install the kit for 364 days of the year. On inspection day, start truck, warm it up, turn it off, unscrew a little Posi-Lock connector that is part of the kit and rewire it to the original MAF wire and the bypass kit will not "be" there.....literally out of the circuit. This change would take you about 2 minutes. This might sound wordy, but you will understand it much more once you install the kit.

Where can I get the bypass kit? The only one I found is on Ebay for $180!

There are 3 options. You skill and budget will determine which one is right for you.

1. Build your own via Tundra Forums instructions (requires free registration):
TundraTalk.net - Toyota Tundra Discussion Forum

2. Get a kit that requires you to cut wires, aka, the SlyFox kit. It is $45 but I you must be comfortable cutting at least one wire. Jeff is a great guy and he was very helpful over email even though I did not go with his kit.

3. The plug and play method. Their are two kits - RuTech ($180) and Hewitt Tech ($225). The big difference is the RuTech does not have a starter wire, so the relay will not work if you put your truck ignition in the ON (but not Started) position for more than a few seconds. Hewitt has the started wire, but it requires you to put it under the starter relay. Hewitt might need a wire cut as well. You can check their website.

I went with the RuTech as I want plug and play with no cutting. I will be installing the block off plates as a redundancy, so even if the relay fails, the pump can't function anyway.

Thanks for the Info!

If Toyota later did extend the warranty for this issue, what do you guys think we should do about the installed bypass kit when taking it in for the service?

Leave the kit installed and not say anything?
Notify them its there?
Convert it back to normal?

Well, its official....lots of dash lights this morning. I assume I'm limited to 45 mph.....?

For informational purposes, it took roughly 15 cold starts from the time the pump was heard until this morning's complete failure.

Jeff, if you're reading this, I'm going to need those flying monkeys right about now

:wink2:

will be there tomorrow! Many of us are fine(no limp mode).....at least for a while even with dash lights so you might be OK for the next few days.

IMO opinion......even if Toyota did extend the warranty.....I rather not have someone ripping the top half of my motor off to replace a stupid pump that does not affect my performance and will just fail AGAIN in ~8 years time.
Just because they issue a TSB or recall doesn't mean you want it:)
My accelerator pedal is untouched and my ECU is not reprogrammed for gas/brake at same time issue........now my cracked dash.......yeah, I will take advantage of that:)

Definitely went into limp mode. I can't live like this! LOL

Went to breakfast this morning and tried disconnecting the battery since the pump isn't used on warm starts. Codes cleared for now. Looking forward to installing the bypass.

Don't even sell or trade it with the mod in place.
Someone else will tell you why and mention the 3 letter agency and CFR and penalty.

No one is testing emissions on cold starts so I'm not thinking it will matter.

The only reason any manufacturer puts an air pump into any flow path is to dilute that flow path with oxygen. It otherwise serves no purpose.

The gov, if interested, would not agree at all. Tampering with factory installed air pollution equip. Felony
In the old days (70's) it was just a $10K fine

I'll blame Toyota for their inaction on the matter.

Thank you for the assist slyfox75. Truck seems to be fine now
