shakey steering wheel

my 98 4runner shakes in the steering wheel at anything over 55mph i didnt have the wheels balanced on the machine with the hawkeye deal yet . I guess i just think if it was a balancing issue wouldnt it shake all the time at anything over 55mph? thats whats wierd some times it doesnt shake at all then all at once it will start, heres another strange thing when your backing out of a drive way,(mine has a slight downward grade to it) and your turning to go onto the road as soon as the front tires leave the slope the steering wheel jerks to one side. I did replace the rubber bushings on the steering rack with the poly ones and that seemed to get the slop out of it but some thing still dont seem right. does this sound like a steering rack issue? if so whats a good brand to buy other then toy ?
thanks

Not sure about the steering rack issue, but get the proper wheel balance first before exploring other causes.

thai is right. always start with the more common solutions before looking for the harder ones.

go get your tires blanced (hunter, haweka.. the two h's).

T4R's front end is very sensitive, check the wheel balancing first! that's what I had trouble with mine after having a tire shop to put on new tires without knowing how to balance 4Runner's rims and tires.
