shell sliding windows removal?

I need to get them out so they can be re-tinted the right way (the new tint on the covered inside edges are peeling on both front slider windows)

I'm looking at them and they're in there tight with no wiggle room.

What is the trick to popping them out?

From inside remove the weatherstrip around the window.Get a razor to cut the glue from the frame and fibergalss. Once most of the glue is off push the window or use flat blade to pry or have someone help pull from outside. There are screws on the L trim to remove seen in the exploded pdf diagram. TRANSLATION: As stated already.. TEAR IT APART!:beer:

take the inside window trim off. then you can get a flat head screwdriver and wedge it in between the window and top then the push the window out. its not hard. When i took mine out i could not believe how easy it was. there is nothing but some stick stuff holding them in..

I just pulled mine out last week. It's real easy. Once you remove the inner trim and plastic gasket trim from around the window, take a utility knife and run it along the inside edge all the way around the window to cut the butyl tape. Then push the windows out from the inside.

HA, ya think?!? Glad you didn't go thru all that ridiculousness JUST for a good tint job!! That's where knowing a good tinter comes in handy, I've gone to the same guy with every vehicle I've owned and sent my parents and friends to him. Glad you got it done easy.

This was a helpful thread, so I thought I would add some pictures. Wanted to paint the shell top on my 1987, as well as replace one of the sliding windows due to rust. Here's the top, and why it needs a paint job.

I was able to find a driver's-side sliding window on eBay to replace my rusted one. This vehicle spent its early years in British Columbia, so the the rust is up top (also had rust around the windshield) instead of around the fenders and rocker panels like a Midwest vehicle.

Started with a very light application of the heat gun to soften the butyl tape. Be careful, too high a setting you'll melt the fiberglass! Then worked the scraper between the window and the shell. Did this all the way around the window and then it was easy to remove the window by hand.

With the window removed, used the heat gun and scraper to get rid of the largest remaining chunks of butyl, then applied paint thinner with a cloth to clean the rest. After that, gave it a wash and it's ready for primer!

not the sliders, but I replaced one of the quarter windows(rear curved) last year. I used some really nice double sticky tape. it was more like putty then foam. I got it from a local Window company.

I imagine the same/similar stuff could be used for the slider.

I wish i had thought of using a heat gun when pulling a set out windows out of a 2nd gen, the butyl tape toyota uses is a pain in the butt

Nice job! I would be tempted to replace that with gull-wing / flip-up window (like on after-market camper shells or more expensive versions on Land Rover and land Cruisers) for easier access to gear inside

Excellent share used your pictures and just finished changing mine do not step in frame and pull frame to install glass remove single phillips screw and use to clean stiff putty knives push down on glass make sure slide seal is on right again thank you saved me time ... also I did not remove the trim pieces either ...
