She's a Real Beaut Clark - My 88 Build

Hey whats going on. Just picked this truck up about a month ago. I absolutely love it. 4cyl/5spd. Runs like a top. Looks like hell, but any truck worth its weight has a dent or 20 in it. I'm not thinking anything too crazy. Patch the rust, build some bumpers, a cage in the rear to support a soft top. Old military green paint, shark teeth, airbrush some fighter plane details, and get my ass back into the trails. My last woods truck was a 98 S10 ZR2. Lost my mind for a short period and got rid of it for a nice set of legs. When my sanity returned I ditched the legs, but the truck was long gone.

Anyways, I finally got another truck that i can beat around the local trails. I'm from nashville, so it's mostly sinking in mud or dodging trees. I paid $800 for the truck. It's my daily driver, but I wanna be able to head a few hours away to some trails, and be able to return home. I'll stick with the ifs. I know its not as capable, but i'm a firm believer in factory engineering. They've got the budget for r&d. But i'm not against beefing it up where possible. Anyone have any suggestions about this? I'm new to Toyota. Always been a Chevy man, so I'm gonna have a learning curve. I've done most of the routine maintenence. Plugs/wires/cap/rotor/oil/filter. (I'm a firm beleiver in Wix filters) I finally got the back window up today. The dent in the tailgate was big enough to cause the window to get stuck 1/4 of the way up. When i opened the access panel I figured out why the window wasnt working at all. Without a motor its impossible. Other than a decent dash, the interior is shot/nonexistent. My drivers seat padding is someones old pillow, and a couple towels. There is no carpet/floor covering/rear seat/rear interior panels. It's all basically bare metal. There are 2 heavy rust spots in the rear in front of the tires. I've got a welder, more than likely i'll patch some crude panels in there and be done. Here she was when i brought her home

I welded that sweet ass exhaust the day after i brought it home. When i got it, the exhaust had rusted off at the bottom collector, and was held up with a bungee cord and a coat hanger. The decibal level was pretty extreme. A buddy gave me the muffler and tip off his mustang. His 3" pipe on the muffler was way to big, so with a few pieces of scrap and turning it almost 90* i had a weldable gap. It's not pretty, but it gets the job done. Getting a new set of tires on it this week. I might put some fender flares I made before. Used rubber cove base, sheet metal screws, and zip ties to make flexible fender flares. They worked like a dream, and cost about $20 Heres a picture.

I'm definitely form over function, and free above all :-P That bumper was all free scrap metal. And square tubing is so much easier to mount things to. But anyways, i'll build some simple bumpers for the Runner, make the interior atleast decent enough to take one of these southern belle's out for a nice seafood dinner. Here it is after a bath.

I'm on vacation all week with nothing to do, so I'll post pictures as I continue to add a touch of class to this old beauty.

Good call on the IFS, I wheeled my '86 all over Utah and never had any trouble with it. Balljoint spacers if you need a little more clearance, and first chance you get you should drop the CVs, hammer out the studs on the halfshaft flanges, and replace them with bolts. It'll make a CV change on the trail 10x easier.

Welcome to the forum.

Picked up some seats out of an old supra, and some steel tubing to build a front bumper. Hopefully since they're both toyota seats, and similiar years, it wont be too much of a pain to swap the tracks.

Got the seats mounted up today. A few bolts, a few welds, and its perfect. I mounted them a couple inches behind the factory locations, i'm 6'2 and need some legroom. They are awesome. The cushions are still firm, the side bolsters still hold you in the center. $25 a piece, well worth the money for the comfort.

I'm putting a set of gray and black seat covers to match my interior tonight! I believe these seats are beyond a carpet cleaner :P

Got the grill/bumper fabbed up today. Painted the grill pieces with the headlight trim black, mounted them, now im waiting on the paint to dry so i can mount the mesh behind the openings. I'll have to post more pictures tomorrow when its daylight.

Got the main frame of the new bumper/grill painted and mounted. I like the front profile, although I think I need to paint the main hourglass opening frame a bright color, maybe red, or lime green. From the side it's a little flat, it needs some dimension. I'm thinking about possibly angling pieces out slightly from the edges under the headlights, and using 1.5" flat stock at an angle to bring the main hourglass frame out some. Add some dimension, a couple Trek Lights, some tow hooks, and a couple emblems, this thing should be ready to go.

Does anyone know of a reputable dealer of led strip lights? I'd like to make the 2 lower triangles turn signals by flush mounting strips inside them, basically making 2 giant triangle turn signals that are somewhat out of sight until lit up.

Well my uncle threw a wrench in my plans. He used to have an '80s model Landcruiser, which he unwillingly sold a few years back. I guess he took some parts off, one including a 6K lb winch. He offered it for my 4runner, for free. Number 1, I have trouble turning down anything free, and 2, I've always wanted a winch on my woods truck. Anyways, now i've got a winch, and what i think is a new sweet ass bumper. :whoo: The winch won't fit behind the bumper, and I'm not a fan of having it visible on the front. I dont like how they look, and i dont want it stolen. I was wanting a little more dimension to this bumper, but i dont want to obstruct the middle hourglass shape. I'm thinking of bringing that main peice out far enough to mount and tuck the winch behind it, and just have the fairlead roller visible. Right now im thinking i'll cut 3 sides of the triangle tubes on each side, which will allow me to angle them back. Should give me the dimension im looking for, keep the big open mouth front end, and have a winch. It should also offer a reasonable angle to fab my own skidplate, and run it from the bottom of the hourglass to where the original skidplate is mounted. I dont have much faith in what that flattened tin can of a skid plate will offer in terms of protection. Can anyone with experience with mounting/operating a winch give me some tips on what to consider, what to look for, etc... I really appreciate the help!

There's a guy on the Goldwing Forums that might be able to hook you up. Give Lewis a call and see if he can put together something for you.

I've never run a winch, but from what I understand you'll want to brace/plate that front crossmember or risk tacoing it. 4xInnovations sells a kit for that.

My biggest beef with your bumper design is how much it kills your approach angle. It's too low, it'll hit a ledge well before your tires do.

Are you sure? Maybe the angles of the pictures make it look lower than it is. The lowest bar in the center is about 1/4" above the very front perforated crossmember. For example, if I didnt have any bumper period, my approach angle should be the exact same as it is now. Am I missing something? I'm not trying to disagree, maybe theres something im not factoring in. Thanks for the heads up though!

Got a few items that I didnt need but had to have for the ol girl. The TRD emblem i thought would look sweet at the bottom right of the hourglass, then regular Yota emblem in the middle of the grill, Cadillac on the back, and the Lot Lizard placement is still up for debate!
