Hey whats going on. Just picked this truck up about a month ago. I absolutely love it. 4cyl/5spd. Runs like a top. Looks like hell, but any truck worth its weight has a dent or 20 in it. I'm not thinking anything too crazy. Patch the rust, build some bumpers, a cage in the rear to support a soft top. Old military green paint, shark teeth, airbrush some fighter plane details, and get my ass back into the trails. My last woods truck was a 98 S10 ZR2. Lost my mind for a short period and got rid of it for a nice set of legs. When my sanity returned I ditched the legs, but the truck was long gone.
Anyways, I finally got another truck that i can beat around the local trails. I'm from nashville, so it's mostly sinking in mud or dodging trees. I paid $800 for the truck. It's my daily driver, but I wanna be able to head a few hours away to some trails, and be able to return home. I'll stick with the ifs. I know its not as capable, but i'm a firm believer in factory engineering. They've got the budget for r&d. But i'm not against beefing it up where possible. Anyone have any suggestions about this? I'm new to Toyota. Always been a Chevy man, so I'm gonna have a learning curve. I've done most of the routine maintenence. Plugs/wires/cap/rotor/oil/filter. (I'm a firm beleiver in Wix filters) I finally got the back window up today. The dent in the tailgate was big enough to cause the window to get stuck 1/4 of the way up. When i opened the access panel I figured out why the window wasnt working at all. Without a motor its impossible. Other than a decent dash, the interior is shot/nonexistent. My drivers seat padding is someones old pillow, and a couple towels. There is no carpet/floor covering/rear seat/rear interior panels. It's all basically bare metal. There are 2 heavy rust spots in the rear in front of the tires. I've got a welder, more than likely i'll patch some crude panels in there and be done. Here she was when i brought her home
I welded that sweet ass exhaust the day after i brought it home. When i got it, the exhaust had rusted off at the bottom collector, and was held up with a bungee cord and a coat hanger. The decibal level was pretty extreme. A buddy gave me the muffler and tip off his mustang. His 3" pipe on the muffler was way to big, so with a few pieces of scrap and turning it almost 90* i had a weldable gap. It's not pretty, but it gets the job done. Getting a new set of tires on it this week. I might put some fender flares I made before. Used rubber cove base, sheet metal screws, and zip ties to make flexible fender flares. They worked like a dream, and cost about $20 Heres a picture.
I'm definitely form over function, and free above all
That bumper was all free scrap metal. And square tubing is so much easier to mount things to. But anyways, i'll build some simple bumpers for the Runner, make the interior atleast decent enough to take one of these southern belle's out for a nice seafood dinner. Here it is after a bath.
I'm on vacation all week with nothing to do, so I'll post pictures as I continue to add a touch of class to this old beauty.
