Shock Data Curves?

1st my hat is off to those who contribute to this forum, endless hours of research pretty much answered all my questions and had me correcting about every salesman that I dealt with (although for most it doesn't take much, no offense to the good ones). I placed my order for a 2014 Mag Gey Trail Premium with KDSS a couple weeks ago, still waiting on a build date.


Does anyone happen to have Force vs. Shaft Velocity or Force vs. Shaft Displacement curves for any shocks offered for the 4runner (Icon, Fox, King, Toytec,OME, Stock). I called Icon this afternoon and they said they would not release that information, assuming other manufacturers are the same way. I guess I can't blame them as that is like asking for dimensioned CAD drawings to someone’s custom parts however it seems like the only way to compare shocks in an unbiased way. I still think that for the $$$ (mainly on the first 3) we should be provided hard data on to the difference and not have to rely on others finely tuned derrieres. :ohwell:

Granted I am in no way qualified to interpret that data but it would be fun to take a look at. I do not plan to make any changes before spending some quality time in the driver’s seat with the stock suspension, just doing a little online investigating.

It's a good question. What will it tell you? Not much I'm afraid. In order to fully evaluate them you need much more than that such as: Fluid type, Test Temp, orifice size, nitrogen precharge, all volumes and areas, etc. For example, you might get force/velocity on one shock but it was tested at the far end of the spectrum. Another shock might be running a higher precharge. Still another might be adjusted to "soft" lol. Now, if you could buy one of each and set the testing parameters (like shock manufacturers do to evaluate the competition) then you would be able to evaluate properly. Just going off of simple force/velocity probably won't tell you anything at all. Good luck though!

My thought was that the type of fluid , N2 pressure, piston area etc doesn't matter as those are internal to the shock "system" (yes temperature rise between the shocks and how the fluid reacts could have a large impact, seems the overland journal tried to include this variation), I just want a how does x shock dampen vs y shock and a dynamometer test seems to be the best way to do this. Agreed that ideally we could look at 1 of each OEM on the same test stand and that would be a good starting point!

Doubtful we will ever get hard #'s and as 1engineer pointed out how much use they would be is debatable. Best answer, find a fellow owner with the set up you are interested in and ask for test run.
