That will kill departure angle too though. The tire is offset enough where view is only partially blocked. If you want a tire carrier, there is no easy way to keep your view without killing departure angle

Not on any cruiser i have seen. In fact, a guy came up a couple days ago in his 80 series to look at this one and just had 35" KM2s installed. He said that it rubs badly in even mild turns and bottoms out very easily. I would think 3" would be mandatory for 35s.

No offense, but "partially blocked" appears a bit generous, it looks mostly blocked. Can you take a pic from the drivers view looking back? Maybe the view from inside isn't as bad is the outside makes it look.
That does make sense about the departure angle though, especially with larger tires. I hadn't thought about that with these rear mounts.

Really? I don't remember having any problems with them before my lift but maybe I did. I traded tires from stock, to 285, to 315 and put a lift on within a relatively short time. Could be that I was stock height with 285s and no rub. I know for sure that I had no problems offroading with my 315's and ironman 2" lift though and stock wheels. Sorry to hijack the tire carrier thread, carry on.

I think it is a good idea to note that "rubs badly or doesn't rub" is kind of vague. The key is when does it rub? For me a little rubbing in the city wouldn't be a big deal but I am pretty sure that slight rubbing in the city EQUALS very bad rubbing to the point of problems when wheeling and attempting full flex.
You may be able to fit 35s on your truck with a 2.5" lift in front but how will they rub when you disconnect the front sway bar and attempt to go up something that requires maximum flex? It is very possible you will get out to the trail and not be able to proceed because of the rubbing.

But, the plain and simple end of it is that you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Oh, and just for reference, take a look at the CBI for the 4th gen. It blocks just as much. And is actually mounted HIGHER than our tire even though the tire is much smaller. Departure angle is key. You don't want to land on it and have it pushed into the body.

The rear window being blocked is really not a big deal.....I just use my side mirrors more, and turn my head to see through my rear cargo area windows....when making lane changes and such. I back out of my garage / driveway with no issues.

I had the tire on my Jeep as high as I could get it without it looking re****ed and still hit it on drop offs. Since I had OBA, I'd wheel with it flat just to gain that several more inches of clearance. If I were going to run a tire carrier on my rig, I'd have the tire as high or higher than the one pictured. I personally am fully capable of using only side mirrors (didn't even have a rearview in my Jeep) so departure angle to me is much more important than what I can see from my rear view mirror. Especially when I consider that fact that 4runners have much more hanging off the ass end than a Jeep.
The plan for mine is to make a carrier that slides in the hitch receiver so that I only have to deal with it when I want to and I guarantee you won't be able to see out my rear view.
+1 for driving with side view mirrors, a couple months driving a work van did that for me. Really like the bumper, hoping this will be available to order and not just in shop. Glad a rear tire carrier came out to match to the tube up front, I really like the tube front bumper but was worried about lack of matching rears with a tire carrier.

Looks good finished. I didn't mean anything by my comment, I am really just curious about the loss of visibility, and you seemed to brush it off as not a big deal. I don't wheel yet, and likely will never wheel more than I DD in this thing, so I think for me, the loss of rearview mirror visibility would be a big deal. I wish it wasn't, because I love the look of the rear mount spare.
I also didn't realize that there was such loss in departure angle due to the tire carrier; it makes sense, I just haven't heard anyone complain about it until now.
Anyway, very cool bumper. I like that it swings out to both sides.
One other question though about the preload on the tire. How will this be affected by different size tires, or different backspacing wheels? I don't remember other bumpers being preloaded on the tire (maybe they are and I didn't notice it). I don't mean this as a criticism, I am just curious since this seems different than what I have seen before.
