Silicone Removal Top Painting

So this might need to go to another section it is a 1st gen related question. Whomever messed with my top last decided it was a good idea to coat the bottom of the roof rack with silicone before re-installing it. I am trying to prep it for paint but this silicone is being a pain to scrape off. I have been going at it with a razor blade but it taking forever, is there a better way.

Also I want to rhino line, or bedline it, what is the best prep for the surface? Just a good sanding to rough it up and clean it off?

Can't speak too much for the silicone other than buying an adhesive remover from Lowes or Home Depot. As for the bed liner, you want to rough up the surface. The first time I did I did nothing and it peeled off. The next time I roughed it up with a wire brush and it is holding solid.
 
Ok would it be necessary to repair the surface damage to the fiberglass? From the way it sounds some 80 grit sandpaper and leaving the rough spots is a better idea than repairing the rough spots.
 
Yeah I am kind of torn right now trying to make this decision. I want to be able to easily take the top off an on, but I fear with rhino or bedliner that it will be too heavy to do on a regular basis. Plus paint is cheaper than rhino liner. But paint will scratch. Someone suggested tintable undercoating, I am wondering if that is an option.
 
How heavy is the bedliner stuff? I can't think that'd add more than 5 pounds, tops, would it?

Anyway, if you're worried about weight or damaging the top, build a hoist for it. Use cargo straps and a boat winch, might cost you all of 50 bucks.
 
Steam? never thought of that, well I have almost got it all off now, some razor blading and 80 grit sandpaper got it pretty well. I am fiberglassing the holes now where I removed the rear windshield wiper. I hated that thing so off it went.
 
I sprayed AL's Liner (close to rhino liner) on my complete truck and the fiberglass top. For every gallon of that stuff I think it weighed less than 6lbs. No matter what you spray it with it should not increase the weight so that you will not want to take it off..

How much did it cost if I may ask? I've been told to use Raptor Liner which is like $119 a box.
 
its $99 a gallon.. they told me to buy off EBAY cause they offered free shipping at the time.. I used a custom color.. if you can use black, grey, tan, or white then you will not need the tint. I wanted orange so I paid for the tint.

Dont buy their gun for $50.. Harbor freight has it for about $15.. It's the EXACT same gun.. the hopper on the gun holds about half the mixture.. you have to play with air flow to get your desired spray just right..

Next time I will roll a thin coat on then spray over it..

i did my hole truck in 1 gallon of hurculiner white the kit cost 127 shipped
i can say its not heavy at all it
the reason people think its heavy is because its typically seen in truck beds, in truck beds they recommend 4-5 coats. i put 1 coat on the body of my truck and got a nice look and tough exterior
