Anyone have experience with the Jaos skid plate (http://jaosusa.com/large.asp?catid=&theid=90)? I'm looking for something to cover up the exposed portion of the radiator and stuff up in the very front (wishing we got the full coverage there like the FJ). I'm also open to other recomendations. I saw the HDPE do-it-yourself skid, but I'm not too comfortable with the bending stress that it puts on the bolts. Downey off-road has one, too, that looks like the Jaos one, but w/out the cut-outs for radiator ventilation.

I'm fabricating skid plates for 4Runner.
They are complete replacement of stock ones + gives some protection to the transmission and transfer case.

List is $185 on the price sheet. Since I was the first one to fit it to a 4th gen I got a nice discount.
 
How do you like this skid Jim? Im in Long Beach and talked with Downey the other day. I could pop on over and pick one up.

Since I am mechanically challenged, do you have a recommendation of someone who could install them?

Does the skid present any problems with the dealer when you take it in for servicing?

Other than Demello sliders (love'em) I don't have any other mods yet, and really need some better armor underneath.

The skid has already paid for itself on a couple of outings. I think that fit could be a tiny bit better and Downey was making adjustments after I got mine. The factory skid is pretty weak so you'll want to replace it at some point.

Install is not hard but since the skid is heavy a floor jack can make it easier. Since my 4Runner is lifted I laid facing up on a mechanic's roller-cart, laid the skid on top of myself and then went under the truck and bolted it in....

A lot of the skids out there make no allowance for getting at the oil drain plug. They expect you to drop the skid every time. Some dealers might charge extra to deal with that. I drilled a hole in my skid and installed an oil drain valve from Fumoto. Just search the forum for my thread on that.

There are a bunch of skids coming out for the FJ-Cruiser. With minor tweaks they will fit the 4Runner. Budbuilt will soon release skids for the 4Runner and theirs can go all the way under the transfer case.

Thanx Jim. I think I'll also call Bud Built and see when their 4R skids are coming out. A friend of mine who runs with TTORA highly recommends them, but I didn't see that they had any 4R skids. Good tip about the oil drain valve too.

I talked with Bud today and the skids for the '04 4R are made - he just needs to test them. He is renting a 4R this week in order to do so and said they should be ready "soon"... and I believe that would be by the year's end.

The front skid will come with a hole predrilled for draining oil:awais:

Anything Bud makes is well worth waiting for, and will blow away anything Downey sells.

Buds stuff is the shiat :bowdown:
and you can't beat his prices and service.

Mine, really... :)

We fitted skids to a 2004 V6 runner and a 2006 V8 runner! They are very close to the FJC but not exact. The extra rear crossmember fits perfectly too. :)

We installed a set of nice red powdercoated ones and took tons of hi res pics. But, apparently, the card in the camera is bad, and I have NOTHING to show for all that work. :(

Oh well. They fit great and we can ship them right away. :)

Same prices as the FJC ones, $600 for the 3 pieces, $50 extra for the rear crossmember. Will have the gas tank skid to match in another week but it will be $200 due to the mounting complexity. The 4Runner gas tank is totally different from the FJC. :(
