So I am going to order my 12 TE a set of Bud's bump out sliders. I'm leaning towards the regular (vs beefy). From what I hear the regular is strong enough for what most people, including myself, would use them for. What I need help with is I should get them powder coated vs use something like rustoleum spray to coat them black. What are pro/cons for powder coating and rustoleum. I'm sure that rustoleum would be easier to touch up and save me $100....for further mods :thanks:

The standard are plenty beefy for what most normal people would need. I've dropped my truck on them a few times, and I've jacked my truck up using them as a jack point several times. They are a great product. I have mine powder coated just because I didn't feel like painting them at the time. Bud uses a really nice textured powder coat finish that will help you use them as steps as well. The texture is really nice when they're muddy and wet!

My vote goes for painting.
Spend $25 on a couple cans of Rustoleum self etching primer and a a couple cans of Rustoleum Truck Bed Liner Spray and your in business.
The sliders are right in line with the wheels, even if you don't off road frequently the wheels pick up rocks and stuff from the road and chips off the powder coating, then you end up painting them any ways to avoid them from rusting.
After initially spraying mine which tool all of a couple hours tops, I touch up the rock chipped areas every 10k miles when I do maintenance. Don't get me wrong, powder coating is great stuff, but sliders aren't the best place for it in my opinion. If you wanted to go all in on coating them, take them to Line-X and get em sprayed with real truck bed liner. Now yer talking!!!
PS - I agree with Mike, standard is fine. I got the beefy ones but in hind sight I might have gotten the standard ones just to save the weight.

I got mine powder coated and they're already scratched from steping on them a few times. I just bought some 3m non-slip tape to put on them but I can definitely see myself having to paint them soon anyway.

I have powder coated ones, they are already rusting pretty bad here in the NE. I plan to remove them in the next couple of months, clean them up the best I can and have them Linex coated. I actually just called today and got a quote. I have seen a TE with many mods locally with my exact sliders with the linex and they look great. We only really have one local guy who does it so when I mentioned the TE he knew exactly. I had a laugh because I said I had been in the same store with the TE owner but was not able to 'pick him out'. He laughed and said I never would...he said a short cute girl drives it. That I was surprised at with the significant lift and the number of mods. I will have to keep an eye out next time and try to spot h.e.r.! I have tossed a pic of the rig up on the forum here a few time and she has not claimed it so I will let her know the site....unless she is a lurker!

Not sure what it's like where you live, but here they use lots of salt, gravel, and sand everywhere in the winter. Step on that treadplate with sand and salt on the soles of your shoes and it'll wear through paint or powdercoat in a hurry. At least you'll be able to touch up the paint easily when this happens.

If you want to have the best of both worlds you can do what I did...get them powder coated and then spray it with bed liner on top of that for some overkill :behindsofa:
I'm not really good at painting/prepping but still wanted something durable that I can easily touch up down the road, so what I ended up doing is having Bud power coat it in textured black (so that there's some "roughness" for the spray paint to bite into); then I sprayed on a few coats of the bedliner that [MENTION=74569]SOcalTRAIL[/MENTION] used.
This way the prep work is all done for me so I don't have to worry about paint adhesion problems, and I can easily patch up any rust/scrapes without having to take the sliders off.
Line-X is really cool and all, but I've gotten some pretty steep quotes in my neck of the woods that steered me away from that option (ranging from $400-$500); not to mention most of these guys told me they can't honor the lifetime warranty since it's not sprayed in the bed of a truck.
Of course, your mileage may vary, but if you did want to go this route I urge you to look into it first and see what your local Line-X guys say, just so there's no surprises later.

Line-X can be pretty expensive. I've tried 3 dealers here in San Diego and found some pretty good variation in their quotes... I guess it depends on how busy they are and how good of a mood they are in.
That Rustoleum spray on bedliner is really really good stuff though, very durable!
I am moving to Indianapolis, IN. They do throw down salt on the roads during the winter months. That's a good point though about stepping on them with it on the bottom of your shoes. I guess another reason for me not to get it powder coated and self paint. I can't wait to get them for the additional evil door ding protection also!!

Welcome to Indy! My sliders are powdercoated and I've had NO issue what so ever with the road salt and what not. The only powdercoat damage I ever had was from parking on top of the concrete barrier to a culver and scraping part of the driver side front.
Some black primer and black (202) Duplicolor and you can't tell where my sliders earned their keep :yo::laugh:

Thanks! I am actually born and raised in Zionsville. I recently moved to Fort Myers Fl last fall for a new job that didn't pan out so I'll be heading back home. At least I got away from one Indiana winter. lol. I left Indy with my expedition and Porsche Cayman S. I traded them both in for a new TE. I sure miss the Cayman obviously, but the 4runner is such a nice upgrade from my 03 expedition (that was lifted with 295 nitto TG's).
Good to know someone from here will be close by! And thanks for the input about the powder coating.
