slowpoke99's super slow timeline/build thread

They're actually not bad. I wanted to go with diamond or ruff stuff axles but I didn't have months to wait. I know early on after reading reviews about the rock assault housings on pirate that there were some issues with oil leaks and diff stud problems but mine went together without issue and haven't leaked yet. I'll be able to give better feedback after I get out and wheel on them. But all in all I'm pretty happy with them.

Read up on the win a fully built pickup on pirate, Dave's was having issues with a few housing being bent.
Not bashing on trailmart because they do have some good products but I'm thinking in the long run you may of rather waited for ruffstuff/diamond.

I'm leaning Ruffstuff pretty hard too, but if Failgear has a sale at the same time I have cash I might consider 'em. :)

Yeah I read that thread. Fortunately I was able to lock it up and test it out when I first finished my rig. No alignment issues with my housing from what I could tell. Locked/unlocked just fine without any binding under power. Lucky me!!! My 14yo son and I are gonna be building him an older taco for his first rig before he starts driving. He's pretty into it. He already rebuilt two sets of axles in our shop. I might save up for diamonds to put on his and just run mine to death then swap them out. Like I said, I was short on time and they weren't my first choice but they seem to be working ok for now.

That's pretty much where I was at the time. I just couldn't afford to wait on them. I'm pretty happy with them though. Knowing that I've got 30spline Longfields in them makes all the pain go away!:bounce:

after sitting idle on my work bench for the last two weeks due to work and fishing on the weekends, i made some progress on my transfer cases. first i had to remove the factory coupler off of my stock case...

i still have a few little things to do like extend all the wiring to the rear case and what not but it's getting close. i'll be ordering my transfer case cross member from front range on friday and picking up a tranny cooler. then i just have to get my drive shafts re-lengthened and she'll be ready to wheel! finally!!!:bravo:

You running 4.7 in the front case? And what's your console situation? I'm leaning towards some kind of home brew twin stick in mine since I have the limited I have the electric case so I only need 2 sticks and a button.

I'm just running the 2.28 gear set in this one. I didn't wanna put too much stress on the stock chain case. I know a lot of guys have run it without any problems but there's not much up here as far as rocky terrain in the northwest that would require us to gear down that low. Although I do still have a t-case with 4.7 gears on the shelf that I got from a buddy if I ever decide to swap it out. :D but I'll probably save it for my sons project for when he starts driving next year. We're gonna build him a 2nd gen runner or a taco for his first rig.

As far as my center console goes, I'm just gonna go the traditional route and have my twins come up through the rear cup holder.

Nice.. I can't wait to build my rig, still in the parts gathering process but have a decent start 9" rear strange 3rd reid 60 knuckles some ballistic joints and a spare 4cyl case. Just have to pinch more pennys for more parts.

i here ya! parts gathering is always fun. i used to love going out to my shop and seeing all the boxes piling up. then i'd stare at it all and be like "holy s*** i got alot of work to do!" that's when you realize that you really aren't making any progress at all until the parts pile starts shrinking. it's all worth it in the end!

so i was at a buddy's place yesterday and he had a tranny cooler sitting on his shelf. Hayden 678 still new in the box. he said he wasn't planning on using it so he gave it to me. i've been planning on adding one but wasn't gonna do any research on a specific model till that time came. so now that i got it, i've been reading up on a few different installs of this model and i'm getting mixed reviews on wether or not to bypass the factory system or not. so now i turn to you guys. anyone have experience with this particular cooler? should i bypass or not? any info will be greatly appreciated!

I'm actually using a hayden cooler, no problems. I can't remember what model it is though, it's been a long time. I don't think I bypassed it. lol, wow I'm a big help right now... I'll look at it and let you know.

Thanks man! No rush. Whenever you got time.

I bypassed the stock lower cooler when I installed mine. That way I don't ever have to worry about the coolant and transmission mixing and I have noticed any adverse effects by doing it that way.

I used the B&M 70268 and bypassed the stock tranny cooler. The Hayden 678 is actually a little bigger, which is more surface area, and better cooling. May even cool too much for PNW. I think there may have been some discussion on that in BigFishAllDay 's B&M writeup. But free is free! I'd slap it in there and bypass the stock cooler. Connect the two ports on the bottom of the radiator to each other so in case the radiator internals fail, you do not lose your coolant. Monitor the temps with a scan gauge or equivalent.

I too landed a free Hayden cooler. Hayden 1403. It is the Trans cooler for a Land Cruiser. I used it as my power steering cooler with the hydro assist. Works perfect.

Love your build!!!

Thanks for the input guys! My main concern after reading different write ups was having the fluids mix if the factory cooling system were to fail. I'll be starting the install this weekend. One step closer to getting this pig out of my shop and on the trail!

No real progress but I got my shafts back from the driveline shop today. Had them re-lengthened +8.5"/front and -8.5"/rear for the dual cases. Now if my crossmember ever shows up I might actually be able to get my runner done. :redbrick:

Just a little update. Been gone the last couple of weekends so I haven't had much of a chance to put in any major time into the runner. Everything that I've done since the last post has been last minute trips out to the shop in the evening when I have nothing else to do to work on it for an hour or two here and there. I did get the duals in. Have to hack the factory mount for the front of the fuel tank to mount the crossmember then fab a new mount for the tank. It was a really tight fit but I should be able to make it work.

Here's the tail housing for the tranny installed with the seal adapter and 23 spline coupler.
