So I was helping a friend winch out a tree from his backyard and my Amsteel winchline snapped. It was only about 3 feet from the end, so I think I will just make a new end and reattach. The way it came, the loop was made by reweaving the end back into the rope. I don't think I have the skill set for that, even though I am an Eagle Scout LOL. I was thinking about using a hangmans noose. Anyone have any suggestions on how to repair this issue?

if it's an acceptable way to deal with winch rope, you could find a quick tutorial on splicing and do it fairly easily...seems cleaner than a knot, but i'm sure others can offer a more qualified opinion

edit: by splicing, i mean a loop end splice, not splicing the 3' back on
 
Thanks everyone! Looks like ill be splicing thanks to the love on this site! I am headed out to the Lone Star Jamboree this weekend and it looks to be muddy so I wanted to make sure this is good to go. If any of you are out there, make sure and tell me to buy you a beer!
 
I work with this stuff frequently in marine applications. I've upgraded just about every piece of stainless rigging with amsteel/dyneema on my sailboat. I prefer this material because it shows signs of wear. When it becomes fuzzy or one or more of the woven 12 strands begins to break, you know it's time to change it out. Metal isn't always as courteous. I have found these videos from Colligo to be the best tutorials (Modified Brummel splice). Check out the soft shackles on the site as well. Incredible working loads and cheap and easy to make a bunch of them.

Remember that knots, frays, shock loading and loading while bending around sharp corners all reduce breaking strength. Was there anything unique at the point of failure? Was it in an area where the line was sliced or buried into itself?

May sound strange, but having a couple beers and splicing this stuff has become a favorite hobby of mine. Amazing material, with endless applications.
 

While this method works, there are stronger ways to do this that don't require whipping or lock stitches. The two most important parts to the brummel splice are the lock and the taper in the bury. The lock is basically the rope choking down on itself and preventing any movement in the eye and the bury is added security. Tapering the bury properly prevents any point loading where failure could occur. While a bit more complex, the modified brummel is the safest and best way to maximize the potential of the line. Adding a thimble is also a great way to enlarge the radius of the eye, which will buy you added safety factor and prevent chafing.
