Still at 13-14mpg... even with the 1.035% tire size calc... I might get 14.5-14.8

I really like my ride, it has 'smoothed' out quite a bit from when I installed them, the rear in my opinion is perfect, the front is still a little stiff. but I do plan on a bumper, winch, armor, sliders... and that should soften up the front alot... the stance is 'level' now, but with the weight, I'm sure I'll need some other type of spring, I don't want to try stock coils up any higher notches... it was a PITA on the 3rd notch... the coils are too small for most coil compressors.
 
thanks for the good info on suspension setup. I'm new to the site and found the info very helpful and may do a similar setup.
 
just saw your build. love the progress your making and that your using OEM parts. i am also in Gilbert and just picked up a 98, same color as yours. id love to see your rig up close sometime.

Can you see on your SG what Short Term and Long Term fuel trim is? That might be a clue in your fuel economy mystery, although 32s and a heavy foot isn't a hard one to solve Lol

I was thinking the 'same thing'... so I drove my wifes 97 which has way more pep... and heck yeah, used a lead foot for sure... it's a sr5 4wd...

so I got 19mpg for 4 weeks in a row. I think the last week I got 18.5 cause I was try'n to be heavy footed.

please note, I'm not on the highway, i'm strictly city driving but I'm against traffic so i get some, but not as much as the opposite direction. that last week, I went the all reds route just to stop and go... but i saw where that put me...

now my 99... I have gotten 19mpg on the freeway many times. granted that was with the stock tire size and the 2inch lift. I'll have to try a drive with the 32's.
 
I've got a mild 2" suspension lift and run 265/70R16s. I drive a mix of city, highway and long distance.

City MPG is 14-17
Highway MPG is 16-19
Long Distance MPG is 19-21, sometimes more if the wind is in my favor Lol

I use BAFX/TorquePro and have noted that my fuel trims are usually pretty mild, and adjust both positive and negative, but nothing too dramatic or trendy. This tells me (I infer) that my injectors are performing consistently well and my fuel system is able to meet the demands of the ECU based on it's other readings and measurements.

YMMV, literally :D
 
Well some fun updates....

  1. replaced the upper control arms with SPC arms, position E i think... the very last position. got it dialed in perfectly.
  2. I bought 'new' stock lower control arms, I REALLY didn't want to wrestel the bushing out. so new ones are welcomed.
  3. Now, I do have Mstudt's sway bar links, the fronts are q-disco's rears are solid BUT... I ruined the front by not taking them off... so when I swapped my front upper AND lower control arms, I took out the sway bar 100%...
WHAT a difference!!! I know bushings helped alot, but the main feel is the lack of the front sway bar. it is AMAZING!!! I have tried it without the rear sway bar, and I put it back on. but the front... so much better. I might just keep it off. Now what they say is 'true' for high speed, no quick swerves without it... but otherwise, it's worth chucking it... I might add a 2nd front shock now that the SB is gone.


I hit an ALL time low... 10mpg !!! woot woot... but that was 80+miles of 10mph dirt roads... hehe

I have my 1st rock rash!!! and 2nd!!! from the same rock :)
I hit 4inches to the pasenger side of my front diff support, wow that was close, AND the drain plug of my rear dif...

I ALSO have my 1st trail carnage/fatality!!!... my windsheild washer fluid can split and leaked ALL of it's fluid out. I need to take it out and confirm I need a canister. don't know if I'm just going to replace it or go after-market. I guess depends on what my options are.

New Mileage update... 179500 :)

well it's been a while...

I'm still rolling the 1999 Limited 4Runner, it has 191k miles... so little...

but I did purchase a 2019 SR5 Tundra, this tows our 3k dry weight trailer... tandem axle w/elec brakes. it's 20ft long and tundra tows this at 9.5-11.5 mpg (2004 sequoia got 6.5-8.5mpg)

I'm seriously considering two roads...

A) finish the 4runner, bumpers/armor and creature comforts (re-upholstery seats, remote start)

B) sell 4runner and deck out tundra (34's/3" lift, armor/bumpers, 46gal gas tank, remote start)

anyways... just wanted to update the thread... decisions, decisions...

Don't get me wrong, I love the 4runner, but all we need as a family is a tow vehicle, and a people mover... The Tundra can do both, and the only reason to swap the 4runner would be to get a cheap gas sipper... Currently the Tundra gets better mpg than the 4runner, holds one extra person, tows, etc... Leaving the 4runner as a driveway queen... And offroad rig.

Can't take the 4runner camping with trailer, was thinking about selling it for a toy, like a polaris ranger that can fit in trailer (toy hauler with tent side beds)

If it was just me camping, 4runner all day... But it's not just me.
 
Well... it's time.

this truck is for sale. I bought a 2019 tundra last year, for family travel, and ability to tow the trailer. yes, I could hang onto the 4runner, and it's sad to see it go. but it's the right next chapter.

currently, it sits at 193k miles. it's 41k miles since I bought it, well maintained, and just in time for the next go round of maintenance.

my question to the forum, should I start it's maintenance right before i sell it?
Upper/Lower Ball Joints
Oil's (trans/4x4/axels)
Radiator Flush?

My thoughts are that if someone will buy it, they will go through it anyways.

I cut the front fenders, and hollowed out the flares, tires WON'T rub even at full stuffed/lock
it has CRAZY pin stripes, custom, you can only get these in the AZ desert.
I added mud flaps, that can be taken off with a few bolts.
ripped out the antenna... more it fell out of the fender and was ran over...

should I do maintenance?

first rule of car sales, don't ever put any extra money into something your selling. If it runs sell it as it is. I sold cars for 3 years. Sometimes when you do a lot of stuff to something before you sell it people even get suspicious wondering what happened to the vehicle. I could NEVER get rid of my 3rd gen. Gonna be a classic soon.
 
Well closing this chapter, it sold today.

I'm sad to see it go, but glad to see it go to a good home.
