On vacation in LA and when I picked up my rental car they gave me a 2016 T4R SR5. Wow! So this is what I have been missing! I have 280k on my 02 but I think it's time to move on. Question: buy a current model or wait for the next generation to be released. Love driving the 16.

Anyway the fifth gen is a great truck 2010 to 2017.. You aren't going to regret buying current model, unless you are wanting something that this model doesn't have.

Personally I would go ahead and buy one if you're ready. Unless someone has some new information, we don't know when the next gen will start, and even if it does, if you will like the changes. If you buy now and the next gen comes out in a few years, you should be sitting in good position to trade with minimal loss.
LOL. Glad you liked it. Search around. No one knows when the next gen will be out and with our luck, they'll ruin it like they've tried to do to the Tacoma. Just get a current gen one and drive it for 280k miles.

Nothing, I hope. I've taken great care of mine and there are no critical mechanical or cosmetic problems that I know of. But, after 280k and 12-years it's just a little tired and I'm not sure I would want to take a long road trip in it.
If I bought one now I'd opt for a new Off Road Premium, White. I don't mind the body style, in fact I like the boxy look. I don't care for all of the big plastic knobs and controls but I'm thinking they are probably here to stay.

As someone who went from a 3rd gen to a 5th gen, just do it. The 5th gen is a bigger, more comfortable, more updated version of the 3rd gen. I'm a big fan of buying one of the last year models of a generation since the drive train is tried and true. If they did come out with a completely redesigned 4runner I would wanna wait a year or 2 to work all the bugs out anyways. You will love it.

If Toyota is planning to go for the 3.5L powertrain on the update, you want the 4.0L for sure. I had a 16' Tacoma and it had several driveline issues. The 4.0L in the 4Runner is great.

If you like how the 5th gen felt and are ready to make that move, then do it.
I've always been told, never buy the first year of a changing vehicle. They tend to have issues. Toyota has been the exception though.
Would not be a fan of a smaller motor if they are going to do that with the next gen.......

There are +s and -s to buying a gen5. I traded in my 06 with 150k 2 months ago after a week rental of a SR5. The first plus is look the 2014-7 aggressive look, just awesome (IMO), ride is not as harsh (fewer complaints from Mrs), engine is stronger and I can go on and on regarding the pluses.
The negatives are some of the deletes, 1. The climate control was really nice, set the temp and go, 2. getting rid of the soft close rear hatch, 3. flick start and 4. hydraulic steering in favor of EPS 5. Glove box design in the gen4 everything stayed in place and the hootch door and last loan payments.
All this I love my said I love my 2016 Trail MGM and would not trade it for anything else.

Buy yours now. I've been driving my 2016 T4R SR5 Premium for 6 days now. We're still gettin' to know each other.
It's nice and smooth running, loads of power, and very smooth & reliable braking. I'm definitely checking out B.B King's Bluesville on XM radio 070, it's free for 3 months. Most of feature run about the same as my Gen3 1999 SR5. There is much more elbow room in the 2016 than my 1999- no more bumping elbows with the door handle or your front passenger. The 2016 door handle is much more comfortable to rest your elbow on than the one in my 1999. The rear seat head rests fold down out of the way to allow folding the rear seat down without taking of the head rests.
Of course now I have to learn how to use the Naivigation and all the bells & whistles of the Entune audio-nav-phone interface.
I miss my 5 speed manual transmission, cassette tape player, the feel of the 2WD>4WD shifter, and the top box in the console.

I will just reiterate what most have said on here already. If there is a next gen (and This is not intended to get that discussion going because it already has too many threads on here) then it won't be shown until late 2018 and production won't be until 2019 at the earliest. On top of that you will be buying a new model, with likely a new powertrain. Personally I probably would wait until the 2nd or 3rd year of that anyway to make sure any kinks are worked out. The resale as others have stated are what they are...very good. There are really no other competitors to this gen in terms of size, capability, on road comfort and reliability. I say go for it, use your 3rd gen as a dedicated toy and enjoy the adventures a 4Runner can take you on!

.just bought a 17 feels like some things are missing like auto headlights and a few other minor tech features but it has the 4.0 and that sold me over the new tacoma. I dont regret not waiting at all!

I know that..... However I also know my TRDOR does not have many things that the tacoma TRDOR can have, LED DRLS, auto headlights, parking sensors, dual climate control, Push to start and I could go on further. It feels dated and I can almost guarantee these things will be addressed in a redesign for the trim I chose. The point I was trying to make is that I think 4.0 was worth it over those options that might come when paired with a 3.5l Hence my purchase of a 4runner over a tacoma TRDOR

Not sure I buy into this theory for the 4Runner. My 2010, the first year of the 5th Gen, has been/still is the most reliable and trouble-free vehicle I've ever owned. I suppose it's arguable just how "new" the 5G was over the 4G, but I doubt the 6G will be radically newer either.
I think any issue with the 6G will be the engine/trans. The 'old' 4.0 will probably become desirable like the 4.7 did. If Toyota would offer some upgraded engine option, it would be popular.... not holding my breath on that.
You won't be disappointed going with the current gen. As others have stated, when new generations of vehicles come out, often times there are issues that need to get kinked out. While I hope that the next gen 4Runner has some nicer tech (LED DRLs, auto headlights, push button start - after going to my 2016 SR5 from a Lexus IS350 this is a little rough to not have, etc.), those are all nice extras. I bought the 4Runner for it's durability and capability off road. Convenience features come second.
Whatever you choose, it will work out. Current gens are great. You could also end up waiting for the next gen to come out and hate it then end up in a 5th gen anyways. Good luck!
