So I just vomited in my mouth...

I walked out to the truck today at work and noticed this... then threw up a little in my mouth...

As you can guess, that is directly under the front KDSS cylinder.

Called my dealership, spoke to a manager in the service dept... talked candidly about KDSS and service techs that are capable of handling said possible job... then proceeded to make sure I bought the extended warranty (couldn't remember at the time), found that I did. Breathed a small sigh of relief... tho can't wait to see if they try to blame anything aftermarket related to the issue. Made an appt for early next week.

This should be fun.

unfortunately this website has told me that no one works on KDSS, so they are lying to you

Probably... don't care. Not my problem (it's theirs).

1. They will fix it (correctly) or buy my truck back, simple as that.

2. If it really does get ugly/out-of-hand, there's a Lexus dealership right next door... I'm sure I can persaude the parties involved to let their Lexus bretheren handle repairs if they are mucking things up royally.

This is a scenario I thought thru long in advance when doing my research on a KDSS equipped 4Runner (hence the extended warranty and close proximity Lexus dealership). We shall see...

(I'll keep everyone posted so they can learn from my experience/mistakes.)

Did you have any other fluids changed recently, could be residue from that.

The Hydraulic fluid utilized by the KDSS system is almost a clear-yellow fluid, the picture you show of the blackish fluid looks as though it may have come from somewhere else.

Interesting. No, nothing changed too recently. You can't see it in the pic, but since the fluid was (literally) dripping off of the bottom of the KDSS reseviour, I made a quick judgement on it. And yes, it is definitely a black/dark colored fluid. If that truly is the case, perhaps there's another issue. When I get home today, I'll climb under and look around (and pop the hood to snoop around the engine bay too).

Thanks for the insight; good to know. :wow:

I don't work in the automotive industry, but I sure would hate to have you as a customer.

Lol... only in principle. I'm actually a very laid back customer with semi-decent expectations (I'm in sales). But on something like this, I would literally go ape-shiote on them. They sold the truck to me, verbally agreed they are capable of such repairs, and hence fully accept the responsibility of taking on the situation. If they even remotely jacked-up my truck (or the over-all KDSS system), and/or didn't repair it to normal spec, I'd have a regional VP on my phone making me an offer that I couldn't refuse to take it off my hands.

It's a #s game... we're in a large metroplex in the age of social-media where they deal in volume... a Regional VP (or even a General Mgr) is going to want to make the problem go away so he doesn't have to deal with it. In the end, they don't care about the profit on one vehicle, they care about it on a thousand vehicles.

oah how ironic this is.... I'm going in tomorrow for the attached. ONly mistake i made was i cleaned it off in the hopes to monitor it so they may call BS on it.

Anyhow, my beef is that everytime I go into the dealership it is 2x to fix what they said they did like not putting all the skidplate bolts in or doing all the Techstream updates that i PAID for.

This trip is for a creak/ bushin noise after the 30k service and i noticed the oil on the KDSS. Maybe its in my head and they are super sloppy draining oil as it is about 10" away from the filter but who knows...

Off topic, but I'm fed up with the service at the dealership as well. Took mine in for an oil change last week. I make it a habit to do a quick visual inspection before I leave the dealership - I see residual oil all over my RCI skidplate and the oil door on the skidplate is totally askew. They didn't even tighten the bolt for the oil door so its hanging down at one end.

I asked the service guy how they can do a simple job so f*ckin sloppy and leave an oil door hanging down (word for word). I then proceed to take the dipstick out in front of him demonstrating my total lack of faith they even put oil, or the correct amount, back in the vehicle.

Will be doing my own oil changes from now on.

Dumb question but did the KDSS light come on? Would imagine there's a pressure sensor somewhere in the system to keep an eye on these kind of things..

No light for me.... yet but as im at 31k this is the last thing that i want to get stuck with.... I have had 5 T4Rs but this is the only "fancy" one with the KDSS.

Not a dumb question at all, at least not to me... No, no light for me (anywhere for anything). I am just REALLY OCD/ANAL... every time I walk up to my truck, I’m always looking for something. I.e. fluid leaks, dents, low air, cracks/nicks in the windshield, paint scratches, etc., etc. I’ll be curious to see if there are any drip markings on the garage floor... have to take a gander when I get back later.

Well, should be interesting for both of us. Same truck, same year, same exact suspension set-up (almost), 38K miles for me. Tho, if tpetsch is correct, I’ll be very interested in seeing what’s up with mine... cuz mine is definitely dark fluid, not clear/yellowish... but like you said, KDSS cylinder isn’t anywhere near the (oil) filter, so WTF?....

On another note, I’ve had the “creak” bushing noise for awhile... may try to get that handled while they are messing up whatever else they’re doing under there.

:ybrick:

I'll let ya know what happens.

I went to Firestone (lifetime alignment) to have them make sure the LCA's were tight etc and they pointed out the steering rack was loose which is another reason Im taking it in... I seriously had ZERO problems with my other 4runners but man, this one is really making me question the build quality at Toyota now a days.

It's easy to jump to conclusions... Take a deep breath. There's been next to zero design defect related issues reported since it was deployed in 2008 on the lc200 and gx and that's a lot of vehicles in service. If you have a lift installed or have altered the suspension kdss will not be covered since you've changed the vehicles suspension geometry.

Wondering if they will blame the lift and say Magnuson–Moss Warranty wont be applicable since KDSS is part of the suspension.
I had a FJ with a 200LB. bumper, 3.5" lift, 33" tires, BMC and lots of fender cutting had a common issue with FJs that the inside of the engine bay started to bent (crumple zone area) some dealerships wouldnt repair even bone stock FJs. I was ready with my The Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act printed in had for a fight but Hamer Toyota didnt even ask one question. Replaced the entire engine bay and reinstalled all my aftermarket parts.

PS if they do fix it please take pictures before and after with the lift in the pics so others can use you as proof they will fix under warranty, it was a group effort by the, "FJ forum" to prove to the dealerships that wouldnt fix it, that it was covered.

If they know what they're doing they will. The MM Warranty Act is not a get out of jail free card to go modifying you're vehicle to the nth degree. It does protect you from being denied warranty coverage on say the air conditioner because of your lift.

X2 on the deep breath. also note KDSS first debuted on the 2004 Lexus GX.

I think you need to chill out until you know how they are going to treat you... and hell, until you know this is even a problem. Getting mad in advance isn't going to help your ability to communicate clearly and pleasantly with the service manager.

If you are always looking for something wrong, you will find it. Life's too short to stress about nothing. Drive, park, repeat.
