Sold my 5th Gen and purchased another 4th Gen

He didn't say new cars weren't reliable. He said he'd take an iron block over an aluminum one, and less failure points over more. The V6 and the V8 are both fine engines, let's not argue over who's Toyota is better.

I'm not [emoji12]. He did say less is more reliable. Hence why I responded the way I did.

I'm 6'3" and I like to sit ramrod straight up. My seat is all the way back all the way down and the seat back all the way forward. In the morning when I'm still elongated from sleep my head hits the ceiling but in the afternoon when I'm a bit more compressed just my hair rubs.

Haha glad I'm not the only one who has this problem.

I have owned 4 fourth gens. Bought new 5th gen when they came out. Got rid of it for another 4th gen.
I hope some Toyota wheenie trolls this forum. Because it would be nice if they grew some balls again and put a V8 back in it. Make it ride like a 3rd or 4th gen. Dont cheapen it up like they did with the 5th gen. AWD with Torsen should be in all but Trail. V8. Period. You cant use this as a family vehicle with a weak V6. Toyota has gotten cheap. Its time to turn that around.

The 5th gen rides like a bubbling sled that is weighted down with lead. 4th gen is better looking. Riding. Power. 4wd system. Fuel door. Rear hatch. Double decker. Antenna. Rims. Ergonomics. V8. V8. V8. no matter what 5th gen owners say. That V6 sucks.

Keep orange gauges. Broaden paint selection. Torsen back on majority. Give back 4th gen features. And grow a set and put the V8 back in. Make another shitbox prius to meet your cafe requirements.

Hopefully. Somebody at Toyota is listening.

OMG, you are right! I did some checking after reading your post.

I'm in the market for a 4G T4R, and the same year Lexus GX are priced LOWER than the 4R. Crazy! Now I'm thinking if I should get a GX instead of a 4R (though I'm not sure if I can get used to the side swinging rear door)...

The side swing rear door is a killer, PLUS the rear window does not roll down (but the rear side ones do open in the GX).

All and all, I like having a fully loaded, leather, Nav, sun roof, V8, 4x4, entertainment system and third row 4th gen for 10-15% less than a 4th gen sport model. It just makes more sense and you can bet it has never been off road in most cases. ALSO, all 4 we looked at had full LEXUS records for ever little thing....because Lexus $52,000 SUV owners take their junk to the dealer.

But that's actually not true. Old school tech is not more robust or reliable.

Sorry, have to respectfully disagree with that claim. When it comes to vehicles, older more proven technology IS generally better then newer. Not the other way around. Almost nothing is designed for reliability or repairability, due to increasing fuel economy demands, corporate profitability and the diminished value of customer brand loyalty. And not just cars and trucks...ask the Navy or Air Force how their "new technology" has been working out for them on their ships and jets.

Sorry I'm going to have to disagree with with that claim. Still have friends that are aircraft mechs in the the navy. They tell me all the time how newer jets are more reliable and way easier to work on.

And I work on an Air Force base and know V22 and C130K techs saying the opposite. Takes too long and costs too much to fully debug systems so they basically get it to meet or exceed goverment regulations and then deal with the aftermath once it hits the market.

Heck, just look at software. Many companies will let you participate in betas for free so they can work out the bugs but you still have to pay full price for the final release that still ends up having to be heavily patched the first year after the official release.

My 93 MR2 is damn near bullet proof compared to a modern equivalent and can still compete well with traffic. As usual though the pilot is the deciding factor.

This may not be the same in all cases but having served in the military they have found it cheaper to swap whole system components versus the old days when they had to troubleshoot down to the defective device. So yes, that is a lot easier.

And my experience says different. F18 legacy and super hornet are way more reliable than the tomcat. Way easier to work on and keep flying. Sooooo
My 2005 4Runner with computer controlled everything is just as easy to work on and way cheaper to keep on the road than my unimog was and my fj60. Sooooooooo. Didn't a tundra come into the news lately with a million miles in it, and that's with everything being computer controlled? There are Prius twxi cabs with over 600,000 miles on them wit the original batteries. Tech is horrible.

Newer cars (built in the last 20 years really) are more reliable, because they major components are manufactured in better facilities, with better tolerances, and as a result, less wear develops on new powertrains. If I had to choose between a modern powertrain vs an old powertrain, I would pick modern every time, especially if an automatic transmission is involved. Yes, new cars have more electronics, and more that can go wrong, and when it does it is more expensive. I agree that all the technology can make a car have things go wrong more often, and repairs can be more costly, but the higher overall build quality makes up for the additional electronics, etc. Newer cars are clearly more reliable. And some electronics actually make diagnostics and repairs much cheaper (think OBDII).

However, if I could get a brand new truck, with limited electronics but built with the higher build tolerances of new vehicles, it would be the best of both worlds.

Tell me how that measures up on the F-35 and tell me newer is better. I didn't mention the F22 because the navy doesn't get those. ;)

As for technology in general, I don't have a problem. It moves so fast now that manufacturers brush products to the market without being fully vetted. The new Chevy Sierra rated low on Consumer Report's reliability list because of this. So did Fiat and Chrysler. The Japanese seem to be more consistent thus the reason we all drive 4runners here.

Some new tech sure is puzzling. The Samsung phone batteries, the 9 speed auto trans in the Hondas and Jeeps. Tesla computer and battery fires.

I can understand the F-35 due to the politics of building it in each state and the other things which drive big money around. It is hard to fix basic design errors with patches.

But consumer products that are defective in mass quantity or in the basic design are still happening. Must be something to do with corporate 'think'. They could not even get new coke right, and the new improved rifles used in Vietnam killed the wrong folks. Stealth bombers that must live in air conditioned hangars.

Toyota 6 cyl engines: several problems in recent (or not so recent, but modern era) years. Ford engine spark plug removal / breakage issues. 4 Runner 4wd funny business: fails due to lack of use !

Transmissions especially: I, or my relatives, had and remember the 1980's GM metric transmission, the Honda/Acura 2001+ transmissions, and my neighbor's 2016 Honda Pilot with the new 9 speed - which they took a huge hit on trading in immediately for a GMC Yukon. Then you have Nissan dedicated almost exclusively to the CVT behind strong 6 cyl engines (to be fair they last through the warranty period - so this may be a good money maker for them with future service requirements).

I remember the old days when things got incrementally better and cheaper. To be fair, most things are still that way but the exceptions are highly visible.

Being in the Atlanta area myself, could you tell me how many miles and what your out the door price was? i've been considering dropping my 2wd sr5 for something with 4x4.

We just traded up to a '12 Limited 4x4. Found an awesome deal so I jumped on it.

Our old '06 4x4 Sport w/ katzkin leather is sitting on the lot at Angela Krause Ford on Mansell rd in Alpharetta. It has 129k miles. Was well taken care of by me for the past two years. They're asking $15k for it but I can tell you there is some negotiating room in that price. We bought it two years ago at a dealership outside of Asheville NC. It was a one owner car prior to us. Has been in an accident though if that matters to you.

It has amsoil synthetic in the diffs & transfer case, Hankook dynapro ATM tires, BHLM, just replaced the AC/heat blower motor about 2 months ago w/ an OE Toyota unit, just had a trans flush done on it at toyota in July, weather-tech mats throughout, katzkin graphite leather w/ seat heaters installed when I bought it two years ago. It's a solid vehicle.

I cant tell if someone put a lift on a F22 or swapped an f35 drivestrain into a 4th gen 4runner and traded it in to get a 5th only to go back to 4th gen because they liked the fact that it rode similar to an A10

The GX's

also look like they use a manual lever activated transfer case as well...

Talk about a problem child,my 1982 Ford Bronco was trouble from day one when bought new, and for years nothing could be done to make it reliable.
and it was a mean bear to do any work on. Thank the Lord i was able to sell it.

My 2008 Toyota 4Runner has had not one problem since bought new.

My aircraft work was on C-47s with P&W 1830 radial engines, and just removing the engine cowling and getting it back on was not fun.

My 00'

True. Would be kind of nice if the 4G had this. Didn't the 3G 4R have a manual activated transfer case?

had the multi mode set up so it had electronic AWD and manual 4h and 4l + rear locker. To this day i 2nd guess my decision to sell it last year.

I went GX. I don't regret it. :)

Side note: I am also very happy that shitbox isn't a swearword on the forum.
