Oh man, that sucks! How many miles on those BJ's? Looks like you avoided any exterior damage, which could be looked at as fortunate (if you squint you can almost see the silver lining, lol).

well.. the truck hit 200,500 last night on my way home from work (all highway) honestly, thankfully it didnt happen on the highway, i left my house to get gas and literally two blocks away going 15mph it happened. snap, boom, scrape, cursing. it totally ruined my mudflap :sobbing:
 
I see that all too often around here... one of the reasons at 180k i redid EVERYTHING.. I'm going to agree though that you actually got lucky, most of the time the fender looks tore up as well.

this also explains the sloppy steering i experience the last week or two... sigh.
 
What year Runner? As you probably know there was a Recall on some years. Toyota replaced the lower ball joints on my 2001 when I bought it CPO. I don't know if that relates to this or not. It does look like the upper failed?

This was my next question, were there any signs that failure was coming? Could have been MUCH worse, makes me really glad I changed mine out when putting the '99 springs in.
 
Opi- I am not sure of your mechanical ability, however I strongly suggest learning some of the basics for our IFS vehicles. This will save you a lot of money with a mechanic and also help out if you break on the trail. I also understand that sometimes we don't have the time ourselves and will need to pay someone in those conditions.

CV's shaft replacement(already half way through a LBJ replacement when doing this)
LBJ replacement (UBJ requires a press so understandable to have someone else do it)
other basic repairs.

Very sorry about your luck, I can't view pictures on this network but I have an idea based on what happened to me. Hope it is back and running soon.

i know i could do it myself, i just live in the city and have no room, and most of my "friends" that have the space dont really want to help out.. i have no choice really
 
The way it popped out, it looks as if there is little to no grease on the top part of that bearing. Was the boot torn?

Damn, how far did you get down that hill? The bolt looks like it had fun grounding a gouge into the pavement. But as others have said, it really could have been worse.
 
Dude that totally sucks, but you got really lucky! I know it doesn't feel like it but realize this:
1) it happened BEFORE the trip- way better than it happening DURING the trip.
2) it happened at 15mph, not 75mph
3) it happened close to home rather than in a mud pit 2 hours from home
4) NO body damage! You've seen the pics, that thing takes out fenders and doors, typically
5) you're okay
6) you didn't hit anything but pavement, and pavement can't sue you

Hitch a ride to Rausch, me and Zach are sharing a room- you can bunk with us for free and still get to hang out!

Yeah I didn't think about most of those you're right. If I can't drive I'll be too emo and sad to go along lol. I gotta get this OTHER vehicle I have squared away too, turbo cop car that needs a valve cover gasket, and now I must do it so i have at least one car to drive. sigh.
 
Sucky! I know, I've been there before... Mine went out at about 220K

Another reminder to everyone to do the lower ball joints before you hit 200K!!!

Yeah, totally agree. LBJ's and the trans cooler are the two things that can cause major damage....not worth putting them off. Everything else maintenance related doesn't have as serious of repercussions.
