Something's missing.

So I got into my truck today and was just looking around, when I noticed a small plastic cover missing from next to the gear shift. It's hard to explain, its a 1cm x 1cm piece that covers a weird hole in the plastic. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I have no idea what to search for, as far as other threads go.

I've got absolutely no idea how it went missing, its driving me crazy. I definitely did not remove it. I spent a good 30 mins looking for it today and lost hope. So now I'm just wondering if there's a part number I need to order a new one. :ybrick:

You are talking about the matching blank that is just above the "P" indicator of the shift lever housing? If you haven't done so yet, I would scour under the seats, etc trying to locate where it may have fallen after popping out. Looking at an online parts manual, it appears you would have to order the entire shift housing (a $328 part) to get the cover. It does not look like it is a separate item that you can order. I would confirm this with your local dealer.

the cover is what I'm missing. Its blowing my mind. I've never touched it, I cant imagine how it popped out, I've only got 340 miles on the 4Runner! I'm going to call up the dealer tomorrow and see what they can do about it.

Not having looked under the cover to see the override switch, is it possible the cover could have fallen into the override switch area?

That's possible, I might look into trying to get under there. I wonder if it popped out while I was driving?

It's not really a big deal that I don't have it, but it looks a bit odd without it.

Cover for the "shift lock override button" is what it's called if you want to call the dealer to find out if they sell it separate and it's just cosmetic or to keep crap from falling down in there.

It might be #12 on this picture called a "hole cover" but not 100% absolutely sure. 2012 TOYOTA 4RUNNER Parts - Conicelli Parts Center

Perhaps you can stop by the dealership and "borrow" one while on a test drive. Look, I'm not usually one to suggest anything shady, but given the dealership vs consumer track record, maybe you can go and win one back for the little people. I for one would not lose any sleep over it.

Hey, if it pops out on it's own (as it did), it was "Defective". Hence, it should be covered under warranty. If you or the dealer find it in the truck somewheres, great, but I would still ask/request/demand it be replaced so the chances of it being lost in the future is minimized. Good luck and be safe.

Mine was missing and I called the dealer and they sent me another. Since then I found the original in a plastic bag under my passenger seat.
