Soundproofing cargo area ?

I know there is a thread about this on a 3rd gen, but haven't gotten a response over there. Plus, I have a 5th gen not a 3rd gen.

My question is, can I fit some sound dealing material and ensolite on top of that and still tuck my carpet back in. There is a lot of stuff under the carpet as is, another 1/2 inch or so might be pushing it.
Has anyone done a lot of sound deadening and have advice? This will be my first time.

Curious to see what you do and how it helps. I have the seat out of mine and it seems like all the noise is coming from the rear wheel wells. If I get bored I,m gonna take the trim off and stick some ice dam roofing material on the bare metal and put some sound matt type stuff in there.
I'm using the roofing stuff because I have a roll sitting around.

I did see some of the stuff that toyota has there, didn't impress me, and I plan on taking it off too.

I have 64 sqft of road kill extreme and 8 yards of raamat ensolite peel and stick. I know that I don't need that much road kill probably but I am going to cover the heck out of it, nevermind the 25-50% coverage people say you need. Then I am going to cover as much as I can with the ensolite. I already have roadkill in my doors when I replaced the speakers, but there is still tons of road noise, so I want to put it all over. If this goes well in the rear I will take out the front seats and do up there too, and possibly the roof.

I plan on taking the trim off the wheel wells for sure, and am contemplating doing the extra storage mod, if [MENTION=137466]Twigrunner[/MENTION] (actual driver) doesn't kill me for even thinking about it.

Putting new wheels and tires on at 8:30, should be done about 9:30 then am going to attack the rear section with the roadkill, ensolite is getting delivered today so I might do that and put it all back together tomorrow. I plan on taking pictures and doing a thread as the last one was from a 3rd gen and not much has changed, but some things have.

WOW! I didn't click the link until just now, you did a ton. So let me ask you, did you just remove all the foam crap they put there and throw it out? Should I get some MLV and put it over my ensolite and between the roadkill, ensolite and mlv it would be better than what was there originally? Or do I put it under the factory stuff, then put all the factory stuff back on?

I left the foam plate there, and did a bunch of fatmat XXL (80 mil) under it, as well as sound insulation (the metal-backed stuff like THIS), vehicle is super-quiet now, but we both did the doors, rear quarters, tailgate, floor under the seats, etc.

Doing just the rear part will not make a huge difference, as a lot of the noise comes from the door panels from what we've seen.

If you do the same areas as Brian, and follow along with his soundproofing thread, you'll have a pretty quiet 4runner! Like I said, I didn't do nearly as much as he did, and my 4runner shows 55db @ 65mph on the highway, that's pretty darned silent if ya ask me!

Okay, I think I should be good with the roadkill and ensolite, maybe do a couple layers of ensolite. I already have the metal stuff in my doors and hatch, I am going to be doing everything behind the driver's seat to start and then maybe the drivers seat after depending on how it goes. Maybe I will apply some ensolite over the door roadkill stuff

Keep in mind, what you have added so far is more for vibration dampening than noise reduction, although it will still help a lot. You definitely need to add something else over the wheel wells. Radiant barrier, Closed Cell Foam, MLV, something. You will get more noise from the wheel wells than the rear bed.

It's a vapor barrier. It keeps the moisture that collects in the door during rain and car washes from entering into the interior. I covered mine back up with vinyl then put some CLD over it. (just to make it easier to access the inner section if I need to. (but yes, you should replace it with something)

Due to bad weather in Memphis out: the closed cell layer is somewhere in transit and might not be here until Monday, but I will cover that with a couple of things. I also noticed the rear panels I covered and cargo door are much more "dense/solid" sounding than the ones that the audio shop did. I think they might have only done the inside panel and not the outer panel. So after I get the ensolite and everything back together I am going to pull all the door panels and put some more material in them.

MY PM may not be accurate as this reads a little different. Are you saying there is water in the hatch itself vs water in the rear of the 4Runner?
If so, that would be normal, although there shouldn't be standing water. If there is standing water in the hatch, your drain holes are clogged. Look for little slots at the bottom where the interior metal panel meets the exterior panel. Mine had mud built up in there. I sprayed the outer skin with 409 prior to placing the CLD (iso alcohol as well) then used a panel tool to dig out the bottom area (through the speaker and access holes) Make sure you clean that area very well until you can see through the drain holes. (Same with all of the doors)

FYI, I still have dirt show up on my bumper deck after I wash the 4Runner from mud that I couldn't reach inside the hatch.

ask and you shall receive...we did a little bit more and covered a couple little spots that are bare in the photos. Also went all the way to the front of the passenger side, but only up to the driver side. Wanted to make sure we could get everything back together before we took the driver seat out. Will be finishing up tomorrow with the MLV and put everything together, already put it down and reinstalled the passenger seat.


The ensolite is really flexible and sticks well, I was happy with it. I haven't used anything else ever, but it was easy to work with..but it is way stickier than the tiles, and like someone said somewhere that I read, if you stick it to itself you have wasted the piece, go slow and you will be fine.

Not to thread jack, but what does this accomplish?

I ask becuase I am very interested in removing the road noise from my 4runner and know it will only get worse when I change up the tire to some a/t or m/t tires. I normally just turn up the radio and thats that, but.....

My other half is getting *****y. My last car was a bmw and there was practically no road noise, she is now pulling the I'll drive because the road noise and rattles are driving her nuts.

I prefer to drive and love the 4runner, but I must admit she is right; it is quite bothersome at times.

How much of the t4r shoudl be done? what is the most cost efficient way to do this? And does this really work or is this more a sound system type thing?

A few other people have done it already, and can give a more concrete answer, but I am doing all this to get at the road noise and whatever other noise there would be. It does help with the sound, which is a great perk, but I wanted to try to make the car quieter, and was in the mood for a project. Driving around today without putting everything back together, the car was much quieter, talking was much easier and could be done at a very low volume. There was a ton of noise in the area I hadn't finished, so we will see tomorrow how big of a difference it makes when everything is back in place.
