Sourcing the hard lines on the back of the steering rack

Sometimes we have those moments where we think how the hell did I miss that, I'm so meticulous, and the mistake so obvious! Anyway I need the two hard lines on the back of the steering rack, I do t see them as a replacement part on the Toyota database. They appear only to come with the rack. I'd rather not remove the rack (PIA) and have considered custom bent lines but would prefer a stock perfect fit instead.

I will be replacing my OEM rack with another OEM in a week or so.

You can have the old lines if you want them. They are in good shape (assuming I don't do something stupid when pulling the rack off. Just pay shipping.

I will keep it in mind, thank you. I don't recall the price difference but I've had great luck with steering products from toyotasteering.com. The removal is fairly straight forward, just need the ball joint separator, and some patience.

Well crap, ordered the lines from Toyota and while they are the right size, they aren't the right thread......what the heck?

What numbers did you order? On my '99, it would be (ignore the ring in the middle:

I replaced both 44418A, and 44418B. Like in the photo above. Now the steering rack is from a company called ToyotaSteering.com and is very nice refurb. But the line and thread size should not be different.

Sometimes I think it's just me! The thread on top came out of my steering rack and is 14x1.5mm and is not standard for this application.

#1 I called ToyotaSteering and they said this was a new u it sourced from China.....have had no returns so had no spare parts for me.

#2 I went to Napa, they make lines but could not duplicate the nipple on this tubing nor the 14x1.5 fitting.

#3 Went to Hydraulic Supply Co and they scratched their heads a bit then said they could made some things with a series of adapters.....the BLUE hose looks to be 1/4", w/o purchasing a new rack this might be the best option.

The hydraulic line method will set me back $180....hydraulic lines $40ea. 90 deg adapter fittings $21ea.....damn, another rack is $200-$240 + an alignment.

I wonder if I cut the 14x1.5mm fittings off and mic'd the inside diameter the see if the 12x2? Could be cut into the back of it.

Or

Find a fitting that acts as an adapter and allows 14x1.5mm male with the 12x2? Into it.

Get a used rack off Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market for $50 and take the lines off of it. You will most likley need a 1999 or older rack to match up.

Do you know that a pre 99 is a coarse thread......cause I could just order that from Toyota,,,,,on that note I'll check the P#.

I checked village Toyota parts site (you see the same schematics as the dealer with p#'s) and the p# is the same all the way back to 1996. I'm going to have to get a new rack and sell this one for parts on ebay.

Last option before ordering replacement rack, I will try the autoparts store tomorrow and see about finding the right size line and placing my 14x1.5 end on then using a flair tool to restore the cut end.

Wife had the grand idea to call Toyota Steering back, explain what happened and ask to meet in the middle on the 36mo warranty the rack has. Seeing as how it was my negligence that broke it in the 1st place. WOW not only did they send a new replacement unit they split the next day cost (mind you I paid a core charge contingent upon the return of said broken rack). Another two thumbs up for Toyota Steering.
