Is it better to put a on wheel with a negative offset or use spacers to push the wheel/tire out more? What are some of the advantages/disadvantages?

You are basically doing the same thing. Spacers are the cheap way to go. If you do get spacers, make sure you don't get the slide on one's. Get the one's that bolt on like spidertrax whs-007. You will be putting more stress on the driveline but that will be the same with either.
