Spare tire removal

For the life of me I can't get the spare tire to drop. For some reason it won't catch. Any idea of how it works?

I had the same problem - couldn't get the 3/8" square drive at the end of the long crank handle to slide into the 3/8" square hole. Ended up having to really force the crank downward (toward the pavement) before it would consummate the connection, ahem. Got the spare lowered and found a liner-upper bracket that's spot welded (as I recall) to the underside sheet metal that positions the crank, albeit poorly, relative to the 3/8" hole. I bent the bracket down a little to allow the crank to drop downward 1/16" or so for a better alignment. Even at that, the bracket still machined the pretty black paint off the crank handle as it turned.

Did the same thing, felt like it made contact but when I tried to lower it, wouldn't move
