Spare Tire Wearing

I took my 4Runner to Discount Tires to get my DuraTracs mounted for the winter and in reseting the TPMSs the technician checked the spare tire and noticed that it has been rubbing to the point of being unusable. Needless to say I am returning it to the dealer.

Perhaps others have or should check their spare tire?

Where exactly was it making contact for it to rub? Why do I have a feeling the spare was never fully tight to begin with allowing motion and rub/wear.

I have a hard time believing this, I wan't to see pictures. Even if it was loose, I imagine it would just bounce around.

I want to see more details too. Once I lowered my spare to check air pressure. I haven't noticed any wear, but I didn't look for a wear. Tire was awfully dirty and pressure was 42psi for some reason, so I just put it back.
What side of the tire was damaged?

I had to use my spare for a week. It was way up at 48psi IIRC. Dirty but otherwise perfect. Finding the hole to crank it down was the hard part. (huh, huh)

I think the tires (not just the spare) are over inflated at the factory. I know that when I checked my tires they were surprisingly all at 43 lbs. I'm thinking it could be because they are expected to sit on dealer's lots for many months?

higher spare pressure makes sense

As long as the sidewall spec is not violated, wouldn't it make sense to overfill the spare? Easier on that mountain road to let some air out than to pump it up to proper inflation.

Keep the pressure in the spare as high as possible so the low air pressure sensor doesn't go off. You can always let air out. If the spare is pulled up tight it doesn't rub and wear.
