Speeding Ticket

Everyone's being pretty harsh for a reason JayKumar, I'll speak only for myself and say I've lost friends and family due to this type of behavior. I'm not trying to be righteous, I was a total screw-up at 17 - street racing and drinking were part of my life. The cops were my friends and I got away with a lot. I almost used the cliche that "I got away with murder" but I was lucky and never killed anyone. I never hurt anyone either, not all my friends and family were as lucky and you may or may not be yourself.

When my son screwed up at 17 his licence was suspended, he payed a huge fine, I sent his car sent to the crusher and he was banned forever from our insurance. To drive again he had to pay for advanced driving school which cost him close to $1k. His was a program created by a guy whose daughter was killed by another teen driver. My son turns 27 soon and hasn't had a ticket since he learned how to drive. I sincerely hope you take the same route before you kill or main yourself or anyone else.

For one, I dont buy this "i learned my lesson" BS that this 17 yr old's spittin out. Unless there is proper reinforcement, this kid's going to do it again....and again...and again. I dont care what s/he says. Right now, this person is in "can i get away with it?"-mode. Typical of the age. Read his posts, how he is confident that the judge will let him off, how his family is good friends with said judge, etc etc. One could only come to the conclusion that this kid is part of an affluent family and thinks s/he is entitled to certain benefits, otherwise s/he wouldnt have been so specific as to add "my hotel parking lot" or daddy's little romp to London.

The hammer needs to come down on this individual. I agree with Jerrydog that id have your truck on the front lawn with a "For Sale" sign on it, you lose your license to drive until much further notice, you go back and take a Safe Driver course, the judge backs the full-cost on the ticket PLUS community service. Lastly, if I were your father I wouldnt assume paying for anythign of yours anymore. Youre old enough to drive foolishly and gamble like that, then you should be paying for that luxury and pay for your own insurance.

In closing i'll simply add that people like you are the reason I worry when my wife is late when driving home alone.

Well, since we're at 3 pages, guess I'll chime in. When something like this happens, you need to go in to damage control. You may or may not not need an attorney. It all depends on the court system in your area. I would at least call an attorney and go over the charges and see if they feel that you should retain them or not.

I was popped 4yrs ago going 120mph in a 65mph on the toll road to DIA. The trooper dropped it to 99mph. I spoke with an attorney and was advised to wait and speak with the DA office to see what they wanted to do. Turns out that I met with 2 assistant DAs. They were both very cute ladies :fro: I ended up having my 6 point speeding ticket reduced to a 2 point swerving in lanes citation. eace:

Sorry OP - no sympathy from me either.

In Ontario your truck would have been impounded and you would be facing licence suspension and insurance rates through the roof on this and rightly so. Driving is a privilege that should be taken away if you abuse it - you literally put your own and other people's lives in your hands when you go out there especially when driving a heavy truck like a 4Runner.

As for buying a radar detector, I would completely lose it if I were your dad and this was your response to the situation. I have to admit however, I would pay good money for an ********* detector to warn me of folks like you on the road.

i agree is dave s, if i were you parent and you bought a radar detector after this, i would stomp the **** out of it right in front of you. i had one when i was younger and used it as an excuse to push the speed limit. we're all quilty of speeding at some point in our life, you just happened to get caught. i wasn't one to go out and run 100+, but driving at 10 to 15 over was a regular occurence. you know it wasn't smart, the question is will you continue to do it or not? you have a lot of living left to do, slow down, life already goes by too fast as it is.

You are not changing or learning from this experience you are only hoping to prevent future tickets.

I realize you are only 17, but that's no excuse. You can make the choice to be an adult instead of risk losing your license, potentially harming others and having to live with those consequences the rest of your life.
Yes, I was young and foolish at your age as well, but hopefully you can learn from us older guys on here and not repeat our foolish mistakes...
Believe me it's not worth it; unfortunately you won't truly realize this until you have your own kids.

IMHO the ability to plea down traffic tickets is why we have such lousy drivers in Colorado!

OP I hope you learned your lesson. Yes you were speeding and you'll get what you deserve. But I think he's been bashed enough. Everyone makes mistakes. And yes I know speeding is no excuse and like i said he'll get what he deserves.

And most of the ppl that bash him non stop have done it themselves at one point or another, he just happened to get caught. I know it one thing to get caught and another to come on a forum and talk about how your going to get out of it, still hes freaken 17, what do you expect.

OP, get yourself a lawyer or use your so called contacts with the judge to get your ticket lowered, but dont come on a car forum to brag about getting out a ticket, one which you clearly deserve and some.

It's pretty damn obvious that this 17 yr old HASN'T learned a damn thing.

This is the big "NO.1" item that should be the focus of everything, and the main purpose behind fines, suspensions and jail time. Instead, he's paying attention to the "how can I beat the rap", or how can he cushion the blow. The whole "i learned my lesson" point of breaking the law is not even coming into the picture on this kid.

As for some of the others that have posted on this thread, sharing stories of what they did or "I once got away with this and that", then shame on you. Youre NOT helping the situation. You might say "hey, lighten up", but its pretty damn tough to lighten up when youre discussing wake & funeral services for someone who died because of morons like this.

3. I may get the ticket dropped because I'm good friends with the judge. I make good grades, and this is my first ticket. It's enough to drop it in a small town like i live in. If not i'll get a lawyer to attempt. There really isn't anyone to piss off. This small town is very lenient.

Not to rehash what I've said previously but you should just pay the ticket and be grateful you didn't spend a night in the slammer. A lawyer is going to cost you as much as a ticket. If you learned your lesson, you won't be getting another ticket for something like this and your DL won't be in jepordy ever again.

IMO, radars are for those who can't controll their foot. I understand that we have all sped at times but buying a radar is an excuse to not obey the law. No offense to those who use them but I haven't gotten a speeding ticket in 10 years - and it was for 5 over. I pay attention to the road and the laws that are married to them.

In any case, thanks for listening and just remember that if something bad happens when driving this way, it usually affects others to a greater degree than yourself.

The reality is that everyone had resorted to "shame on you" regardless if they themselves have been speeding, which of course everyone is and/or has. I think the point has been made and all people are doing now is perpetuating a string of shame tactics. I mean, no one is innocent of this and everyone I
s going to be just as pissed and deflective when they get pulled over for speeding even if its one mile over.

Kid made a mistake, he's gonna get punished one way or another. Be it by the law or his parents beating him into the hospital, or that k rail on the high way. He's probably not going to learn anything at his ager, most of us never did and this generation sure as hell doesn't. So can we please stop beating a dead horse?

ETA: I don't want to come across as bashing the OP. I'm not, not at all. I was 17 once too, and thank goodness I never got a speeding ticket. I don't recall ever breaking the 100's though... OP, please stay safe and slow down.

As for the issue at hand, my advice is to not try to plea anything down, and take what the courts give you. The harsher sting might be what it takes to slow you down. Good luck!

I completely understand all of your guys points. I am a 17 year old punk yes. However, I have many duties and am very responsible. I am the General Manager at a Holiday Inn. I take college courses and im only in the 11th grade. I've never had any trouble with the school. My GPA is a 4.0. Honest to God I'm a good child. You all must realize you have to be YOUNG and STUPID to be OLD and WISE. We are all not perfect. And yes I have learned my lesson! Instead of smoking weed and doing crack like all the other kids my age, I like to speed. Is it just as bad? Yes it is. But it is something i will definitely out grow and mature from. Speed does kill, definitely right.

As far as the radar detector goes. Ofcourse I've learned my lesson to not exceed over 100 mph. But I still may go maybe 5-10 mph over the limit. Its not good I know. But its progression. The radar is there to help me during those times. I do not plan on relying on the radar when i go out on a top speed run in my Runner, because I'm done with that.

I still will keep all of you posted on how it goes. I may go by the court tomorrow and have talk with the judge. See what is going to be done.
