Speedo cable replacement....

Anybody here make an attempt, have pics, or offer any words of wisdom on the R&R. The cable on our 1990 4runner is starting to make some noise when it gets colder out. So, maybe it's time to just fix the bugger. I've fixed so many other things on the truck, I hate to let stuff like this slide. It looks like a new Toyota cable runs a little over $100, uuugh. I should be thankful, cheaper then a new radiator. Thank you.

Pull the dash off, remove the cable from the back of the gauge cluster, Drive slowly down the street while spraying lithium grease into the cable shaft. That worked for me so far. Probably not the best way to fix it though. :)

speedo cable fix

Mine is making this noise too. Thanks for the tips!
Wildcat, don't bother with attempting to lube the cable. I went through this with ours and was a complete failure(ie made is worse). Cleaned it up, used M1 syn grease and 3M assembly grease which only aggravated the issue. I ended up installing a new style Toyota cable. Our truck also needed an updated speedo head as Toyota does not a make a cable with the early style(<1990) end on it anymore. If you look up on this site, I documented the whole fix.
