SR5 or Trail

Hey everyone I'm new to the 4Runner world and have a couple of questions for everyone. I have on order a 2014 Nautical Blue TE with nav that "should" be here around Dec 25th according to the dealer. The dealership has a grey SR5 with nav and sliding rear deck for about $700.00 less that I can get now. If you all had the option which would you choose? I haven't done alot of off roading since I was a teenager but have to have 4x4 for my job. I'm leaning towards waiting (been waiting since Nov 20th) but just wondering what others would do if they were in my position. Also I read in a post from around three years ago that a guy was able to track where his 4Runner was in the shipping process. Is that true or just a bunch of BS? Thank you all in advance and thank you for the forum. I have learned a ton about the 4Runner already from you all.

If it's only a $700 difference get the trail for sure.

1. Why did you order the TE (vs SR5) in the first place?

2. Do you really want the sliding rear deck?

3. What's the attraction... price? .... anxious?

4. The TE have KDSS, or not?

I could care less for the sliding deck but every SR5 in the southeast comes with sliding deck if it comes with nav. The only attraction in the grey SR5 is i'm getting impatient and arrival date has been delayed once already. My last truck 1997 T100 was sold earlier then I hoped so i'm having the borrow cars from family members till the 4Runner gets here. I ordered the TE because I have to drive lot of rural farm roads (mud, sand, and lot of standing water) for my job with the state.

Oh I forgot it does not have KDSS

If that's all the offroading you are doing then the SR5 will be fine. A TE without KDSS and a SR5 are the same as far as drive trains go, with the exception of actuation. The SR5 has a dial and the TE has a lever. They both actuate the same part which is then solenoid activated.

The TE has a locking rear differential, the SR5 does not.

Get the SR5. The new 2014 SR5 has the same body panels and bumpers as the TE. I don't think most people on this forum use the TE to its capability, and the SR5 would be fine for almost everyone and their 4x4 needs, including yourself. Put that $700 towards new tires instead.

No matter what i do i'm replacing the stock tires asap just can't decide on what to choose. This isn't my first 4x4 i have had two S-10 blazers (yes i know they aren't remotely in the same class as the 4Runner). It has been years since I have done any serious offroading but I can't say I won't once the runner is here as much fun as everyone makes it look. Thanks again for all the replies

Yep my bad. Just trying to help and was too quick.

I knew you knew, figured you were just in a hurry. Noted w/o comment because I'm not sure what I would do if it were me.

I've been driving my Toyota's (2 Tacomas, 1 4Runner) off road for 7+ years - not hardcore like some of these guys, but I use my 4wd frequently. Purchased my wife's 4Runner (2013 SR5) in the spring of this year. I purchased the SR5 over the TE for the following reasons:

I didn't want KDSS, planned to upgrade suspension

SR5 4wd's were plentiful, the dealer was willing to deal. At that time, in my area TE's were harder to come by and there was less wiggle room on the price.

The SR5 had ATRAC. I have found the ATRAC on my '12 TRD OR Tacoma to work really well and offer a major off road performance boost. I knew if I had ATRAC on the 4Runner I would have a strong off road performance.

At the time I purchased, I had never needed the locker on my '12 TRD OR Tacoma - every difficult traction situation I had encountered was handled nicely by 4Lo ATRAC.

The few TE's in my area all had the sun roof - I didn't want the sun roof (reduces head room, I never use).

My wife didn't care about the appearance differences in the two vehicles. It is "her" 4Runner, so the cheaper, easier to get, very capable off road SR5 is what we got!

Flash Forward a few months. I was driving my Tacoma off road, crawling uphill through big rocks. The trail was wet and muddy (rained recently). About 3/4 of the way up the hill, I lost concentration and broke momentum, came to a stop. I tried for 5 minutes to get going again in those rocks in 4lo ATRAC engaged. I was gentle as possible w/ the throttle - no go. I tried punching and spinning all 4 tires vigorously to the point of smoking 'em a little - no go. Maneuvered, turned, etc., I just couldn't get going again.

I was about to back down the hill (not fun!) and try another run at it, hopefully without stopping this time. Then I remembered the locker! Locker engaged, a little gentle throttle, a little maneuvering, a little wheel spin and I began to climb again. I made it to the top w/o further incident. ATRAC is very good, but its not a locker.

Now that I have been in that one situation where the locker made the difference, I wish I would have sucked it up and bought a TE instead of an SR5! Rarely needed, but I want it when I need it! The wife's SR5 will probably be my daughter's vehicle in a few years. When it gets replaced, it will most likely be the TE, non KDSS (because we will upgrade the suspension).

If a rear diff locker means nothing to you go with the SR5. I can't believe you'd need that for the roads you are talking. I have all the gimmicky crawl control/multi terrain select stuff in my trail, and never use it opting instead for s mode.

I think the sliding rear deck is optional now on the TE models.

Can anyone confirm?

It was always optional after 2010. It just depends on what your region decided to order from that point on.

For example, there are no KDSS equipped TE's in the Gulf State Region for 2014 (As of right now and for the foreseeable future). I had to order mine. Went with the TE for all the reasons mentioned above and KDSS, as I do not plan to lift (can't park in a parking garage downtown with a lifted truck).

Yes Yotta but yours has a third row, 99% of the one ordered for the southeast region that have nav come with 3rd or the slide. I have zero use for either to be honest. I'm glad yours does't have the slide all i was saying is the VAST majority of the ones here have either slide or 3rd if they have nav.
