Srabai DD build thread

Nice! I think I'm gonna do this same exact thing soon, it makes your truck look really good. I like the dark flares and wheels with the light paint job, I think it looks cleaner.

Edit: How many cans did you end up using?

Thanks man, it was around 10 cans if I remember right. The Rustoleum Flexidip has a nice matte black look to it where the Plastidip looks a lot glossier.
 
Just passed 222,222 miles today. Also finished up painting the other side of the 4Runner. Changes the whole look of the truck.

 
224,840 I'm doing around 1,000 miles this coming weekend so I needed to make sure everything was tip top for the trip.

Threw in some new radiator hoses, flushed the coolant, warranty swapped the front pads and rotors out from Autozone, the set I put on in November became warped after 13,000 miles.
Also drained a lot of the old trans fluid and filled it with fresh synthetic fluid. The old fluid was a nice brown/black burnt mess. Luckily the transmission is fine as I noticed the fluid issue back when I bought it and just got around to changing it. I threw in a transmission cooler also that I'm running in series with the radiator cooler. The radiator was installed last October so I'm not too worried about the pink milkshake.

How did you take off the 4wd knob? I feel like i tried everything, twisting, pulling, yelling at it, but i couldn't get it off.

My 4wd knob is the one with the push button 4Hi and shift 4low. There is a little screw in the side that you remove. Once it's out the knob slides right off.

Hah.. I just found the screw a few days ago while looking for something else. Feel retarded after breaking a sweat over trying to get it off.
 
It's been a few months since I've had to do much work on the 4runner but today I decided to get that goddamn e-locker working. I've messed around with it multiple times only to fail again and again. The actuator was turning and the rear lock itself worked fine. The problem was in the amount of rotation the actuator was providing. Last year I pulled the actuator out of the housing and that took a good 6 hours and I still managed to break the top tab off. Not really an issue because were still 3 bolts to hold it on. Today I took the locker out and started tearing it apart.



I installed and removed this thing at least 20 times today. It turns out that the motor was sticking halfway through the rotation. I took the top piece of the motor off and started messing around with it.



If you look closely, there are two little magnet pieces that touch the copper thing under the bundle of wire. They were worn down so I removed the shaft and flipped them around. The springs are tiny and the whole thing was a mess to do. After that, I started trying to get the actuator to line up correctly. In the end, I hooked up 6V to prong 4 and 5 or 5 and 6. They were the green/red and dark green wires. This let me adjust the gear after the motor was reassembled.

After 5 hours tonight and countless hours before, my e-locker works. If anyone has any questions, I'll do my best to help. I don't really know why it finally started working though.



 
Never seen this build before. Solid thread. I do know a thing or two about Ohio rust, although I must admit, my truck was undercoated some time ago making it slightly, and I mean only slightly, easier to work on.

How do you like the moog coils? Would you rather have OEM or are the moogs doing alright?

I need to do rear coils plus rear shocks and front struts, and soon. I can't wait for that.

Gotta love the rust. So far I've been pretty happy with the Moog coils, I keep my tires at 50 psi so that might have something to do with it, but, it's a few miles away from a smooth ride. The rear OEM shocks are great and if I had to do it again, I'd probably get OEM coils too. The truck does seem to sit a touch higher than the other 4runners I see around here though. Good luck getting your shocks and struts all put together. It sucks, but it's worth it.
 
Noticed a good rattle when leaving from a stop and found small puddles of coolant under my truck after letting it sit for a while. After work today, I threw it on the lift and found the muffler was all gone to hell. It looked good but the whole thing was soft enough to bend by hand.



The whole underside of it looks pretty rough too.



I checked around and found a flowmaster 44 series muffler and threw that on. I didn't feel like connecting the rear part of the exhaust so I just left it off and put a turndown pipe on the back of it.



After the exhaust, I found that my lower radiator hose was loose. I had myself convinced the heads were finally starting to go. I also wire brushed and undercoated the frame. It might not help anything but it looks a whole lot better.

Added another 4Runner to the family. My brother picked this up a little while ago. Second owner with 254,000 miles and some frame issues for $700.





Brought it into the shop to weld up the frame and do some quick mods.





Yesterday we took them out to get a bit dirty.


First crossing he got stuck. Neither of us are experienced off-road guys but we're learning.



A few tow straps and we got it out.



The winch is going on tonight.

 
Took the runner out again a few days ago



Got mine stuck in the river for a few minutes and filled the interior with water





The security module was under the seat and shorted out. Horns went off and the truck wouldn't start. There's a little green button in the box that I pressed along with a few other things to get the truck started and back to the shop.

I ended up gutting the interior. Relocated the security box and dried out my ABS box. Also moved the little red security light to my dash where the e-locker switch used to be. That got moved down a row.











Prepped for install. I drove it for a day without the carpet and interior, never again.





Interior all back in.





I was also tired of the green lights behind the dash so I threw in some red LED's behind the speedo and white behind everything else.





Grabbed some $40 LED's from amazon and mounted them on the front bumper for a bit more light.
