I have 265/70/17 ST Maxx. With mine being slightly narrower and smaller my experience may not be exactly like a 285.
First off they only come in an E rating, and therefore are very heavy. Fuel economy is slightly worse and the ride firmed up a bit. I actually like the stiffer ride, and it improved the nose dive a bit. I find them a nice compromise between a mud terrain and an all terrain, they look great on the truck and in the bigger size they would look even better. As for performance I have had them in both summer and (Canadian) winter. So far they have been great. Deadly grip on gravel roads and mud, a little sketchy on ice, but great on snow. Both packed and loose. They are lasting really well. I have had them for almost a year and they have lost almost no tread. Overall I would say they are a great tire. My only other experience with all terrains is BFG all terrains, and I prefer the St maxx. Hope that helps, I can also put some pics up with them on the truck if it will help.

I have flirted with this tire several times. I have the 285 DuraTracs for highway use and kept my 275 MT/Rs to use offroad. For the kind of trails I seem to always find - hard, rocky, trails - I think the S/T Maxx is the best overall option for trucks running one tire year round. But it is very heavy - 61 pounds in 285 versus 53 on the DuraTrac - and the road reviews are not great. But I would have tons more confidence in it offroad than I do my DuraTracs. The DTs provide excellent traction but the sidewalls are super soft. Push on a deflated DuraTrac next to an MT/R and you see a huge difference.
I'm still holding hope Goodyear makes a kevlar reinforced DuraTrac so I can be a one tire set guy. Probably wishful thinking though, as that would really diminish their MT/R sales.

Instead of starting a new thread I decided to resurrect this one. Any updates from previous owners or experiences from new owners with this tire? I had intended on going with siped km2s but I'm thinking I might get more life out of the coopers and they're considerably less expensive. In 285/70r17 the E-rated ST-Maxx weighs 1-pound less than the D-rated KM2, according to treaddepo.com's stats. This, and reviews from truck forums, leads me to believe it might be a relatively "soft" E-rated tire, which would be good for our 4Runners. Because it's still a relatively new tire there aren't a whole lot of reviews out on them. I'm specifically interested in hearing about the ST-Maxx, lets not turn this into a duratrac vs toyo vs ect..respectfully. Thanks everyone, hopefully we can get some more first-hand experiences with this tire.

I've got 265s, love the way they look, beefy and wider than stock in a 265, and they definitely feel planted. There is a bit of road noise, but I plan on putting in some sound deadening material in the Spring. With the added weight vs stockers, it does feel like it takes a bit more on the pedal to get going and during braking. Overall, I'm satisfied, just wish I would've went with 285s...

I have been running the 265s for a year plus, two summers of off-roading. I am really happy with them, they do have a bit of road noise but i think they are a great compromise for daily driving and being really capable off road.
