Steering Column U-Joint

Resurrecting an old thread - but have a question about the lower splined connection (at the rack). With mine apart, it looks like there is a "master spline" 180 degrees opposite of the split portion of the clamp. Is this truly a master spline, or can the splined connection go onto any of the splines?

Steve.

tackling the job right now,i dont see a key on the steering rack side , but i do see what youre talkin about on the shaft. im having a hell of a time getting the lower end back on though........:gun4:

There is no master spline on the steering rack nub. Only master splines are on the sleeved joint.

Here is the part number from when I replaced the corroded intermediate steering shaft on my 03 V8

Toyota Canada part # 45203-35310 (Shaft, sub-assembly, steering)

I just run this part by the dealership and it's $486 + 13%tax = $550 :(

We get hosed up here in Canada.

I did the repair recently and got the parts from toyotapartsdeal.com
Everything came out to $425 CAD including shipping and import duties/taxes.

45203-35310 Shaft assembly
45219-35160 sliding yoke
90119-08560 Bolt (you'll need 3 of these)

Got the parts in a few days.

Interesting how they count exchange rate, 1.53 when market value is 1.36...
Did you choose Economy or Standard shipping options? Did they shipped parts with USPS/CanadaPost or UPS? I'm assuming they come from States...

They ship with Fedex from Caifornia. The import charges are prepaid when you purchase so there's no surprise bill when Fedex delivers it to your door.

I priced out all those parts at a local dealer and it came out to $625 with taxes. Crazy

I got the part I ordered a couple of days ago and dropped off my truck at my mechanic yesterday in the morning.

When I went back in at the end of the day, he showed me a section that is on top of the shaft/Ujoint I bought that was rusted to hell (see second pic below). I basically had to leave without the repair getting done as he said he has to burn off that rusted clamp. So I called a local Toyota dealer and got a new one plus the two bolts and will be heading back to the mechanic tomorrow to get this fixed. The clamp plus the two bolts was about $50.

I'm in your area, where'd you go to get it replaced and what did they charge? I need to have mine done soon.

I had mine replaced by a local mechanic. He said he had a hard time getting it off.

I noticed that my steering is off by about 15 degrees to the right when I am driving straight now. My mechanic says that a tooth in the other direction results on in the steering being off to the left and wants to do an alignment. I just had an alignment about 6 months ago after putting on new tires and shocks.

Any suggestion?

I just finished doing mine myself. The connections were extremely rusty, as others have found, but with a good soaking of PB, I was able to hammer it off with a long cold chisel. I tried not to move the steering on the rack end and I used the mason line technique to check before assembly. I thought I had it perfect, but despite my best efforts, my steering wheel is slightly off centre. It is not much, maybe 10 degrees or so, but enough for me to notice. I am considering taking it apart and trying to move the spline one notch. I tried counting the number of splines on the old part, which is hard because it is so rusty. I am getting 9 splines in a quarter, which would be about 10 degrees each, so I think one notch will straighten it. the trick will be getting it over just one notch from where have it. It was a bit difficult to fit it on in the first place with the rust.

I had the same problem with mine. The previous owner had the shaft replaced at the dealership, and the steering wheel was off a bit, but he didn't take it back to have it fixed right. So, instead of messing with the shaft again, I just adjusted both tie rod ends equally to center the steering wheel, and all is good.

Maintenance suggestions?

After replacing these parts is anyone using a spray lube to prevent a reoccurrence? Is there any suggested preventative maintenance for the steering assembly that you can share? Thanks for sharing.

CorrosionX will protect it so long as you're diligent about upkeep. Once or twice a year should be sufficient.

Canadian shaft replacement here.
Same thing, steering wheel was out a few degress after new one put in.
Merchanic did not note or match mark old /new.

Three adjustments or "teeth" movements it is now straight.
Told the mechanic it was unacceptable, NO alignment, NO tie rod adjustments.

So he did the on again off again until correct,
Gotta be firm about quality workmanship.

Hey everyone! 1st post here. Sorry if I'm bringing up an old thread here but I need opinions. I just picked up an 05 4runner v6 4wd and thanks to this thread I had the steering shaft replaced and it fixed the steering. Now my problem is that after I had my friend replace it (I didn't have an air hammer or torch or anything) the vehicle pulls slightly to the left when the wheel is straight. I called a shop to have it aligned and the technician said that he recommends taking it back off and trying to get the splines lined up right because aligning it right now could potentially overextend the steering rack and be bad for it or something like that. Do y'all suggest I take the shaft back off and toy with it to try and get it straight or just have it aligned anyway?
Thanks for your help and sorry if the post is a bit lengthy

I think you can just do an alignment.
But if you wish to align the splices, is suggest an easier way. Disconnect the battery and take your steering wheel off. Move it 1 or 2 splines in the direction required and assemble it back. Just be cautious with airbag, any spark or electrical spike can potentially activate it, this is why you need to disconnect the battery and ground the vehicle. It's easier then it sounds, so decision is yours...

First off, it depends on how much "slightly" is. When you drive in a straight line, how far off (in approximate degrees, or in relation to a clock face) is the steering wheel off from straight up. If it is no more that either 11 or 1, then I would try to get the 'friend' to adjust the splined joint one spline in the direction needed to return the wheel to the 12 o'clock position when driving straight. Since the joint was just replace, it shouldn't be that big a deal to loosen the lock collar and make the adjustment.

The steering wheel is pointed to 1 o'clock on the clock face when it's driving straight so when the steering wheel is pointed at 12 it drifts to the left. So you suggest taking the shaft completely off the steering rack and adjusting it? I guess it would need to go one spline counter clockwise? Thanks again for yalls help
