They do wear out but mine got tight before getting to the point that it would click. Best bet is to have someone move the steering wheel side to side enough to watch for looseness and listen for noise (with engine off).

Absolutely agree, I'll do that with a helper. I bet that's where the play is originating from. My theory is that any splines are worn at 400k miles, and this would be the place.

On mine, the pin bearings in the u-joint turned to rusty dust. The splined part uses a pin bolt so they don't seem to wear, on the contrary it is hard to separate them from each other. Another area I've read being an issue is the steering rack bushings getting loose so the rack moves when it shouldn't.

All great info, thx. I have the yoke in my cart and as well as the two bolts. I'm also replacing the intermediate shaft as well.

The splines

Let me revive this old post. I took out my old intermediate shaft in hopes this is my problem. The new one came in today. I didn't mark the old one when I used an air hammer to remove it. I'm having a hard time sliding the new one in the spline on the side of the steering rack. Is there a specific position? I read there is not a position in that end but in the side that goes to the steering wheel. Any help will be appreciated. I don't want to force it in and mess something up.

Is this another sealed lube for life item, or is their grease zerks for renew lube.
I cannot tell from the great photos?

Quick question, does anyone know if the u-joint for the 4th gen is the same size as the 5th gen, just the u-joint.

I'd go to a toyota parts website then find out this info for yourself by punching in the different mode years!
