Steering rack bushing replacement...

Question: Steering rack bushing replacement...

Just got my poly SR and sway bar bushing kits today and hope to be able to get it all on in the morning. My question is regarding the instructions and lifting the front end to execute the swap. Is it really necessary to put it up on stands or will I have the play I need if I leave all four on the ground?

I did both earlier this year and I don't know the answer. The sway bar is no problem. Swapping the rack bushings takes quite a bit of persuasion (a C-clamp is your friend here) and I'd be concerned that the lack of maneuvering room would make it a major pain to do on the ground, but I am going to guess it's possible. Getting the bolt holes aligned was a battle in the air; it might be impossible on the ground.

I take it you don't have stands? Because I can't think of any other reason not to give yourself the room.

Oh the stands that I would use are a 45 min drive away. I'd rather save the time and do it on the ground if it is at all possible.

Yeah, I'd be worried about not being able to get those bolt holes to line up at the end. And then you would be kind of stuck. But I can't say for sure.

Well, to answer my own question...without lifting the front end you cant get enough play from the wheels to pull the SR back far enough to even get the old bushings out. So Im stuck at less than half-way without a vehicle now until my brother can get me those stands. Oh well...

So I take it you can't just bolt it back up? Which means I was right about that part. At least your brother has to drive the 45 minutes, instead of you.
